The hire car that my company has hired for me is dodgy to say the least, so the hire company is replacing it today but I'm confused as to what is actually wrong with it. The car is a Peugot 308 1.6SW HDI with 10k on the clock and it's on a '10' plate.
The best way I can describe the problem is this: on normal roads it's fine, but on the motorway I can be driving at a steady 70ish for ages with no problems when suddenly a gradual shaking of the steering wheel starts until it becomes really violent if I don't slow down again, (it will disappear at around 40-50mph). If I slow down without braking and then speed back up to 70mph it comes back almost immediately, however if I use the brakes to slow down and then speed up again the fault sometimes, (but not always), goes away for a while but then at some point down the road reappears.
This leads me to think that maybe the brakes are sticking on or something and my pressing the pedal frees them, but if that was the case why does it come back again eventually when I'm not touching the pedal?
The shaking was so severe that I pulled into a service station and checked all the wheel nuts as I thought a bloody wheel was coming off!

As I say, the hire company is replacing it but I'm interested if anyone has any ideas as to what's wrong.

Cheers.

"The car is a Peugot 308 1.6SW HDI"

Therein lies the problem.

The car is made of papier mache and the steering column is probably old toilet rolls held together with sellotape. And the wheels and tyres are a combination of jelly and concrete

Don't talk st.

Some moron probably broke the car before you got it, OP - people specifically try and ruin hire cars. Why I don't know.

it's not s**t, I recently drove my grandfathers brand new 308 SW and I have to say, an ageing 306 is probably better screwed together, and that's saying something!

could be tyre, or balancing related. thats the usual vibration cause.

take it back to the hire place asap.

I had something similar on an old polo shed I bought to get me home after my car broke down once.

The right front wheel bearing was gone. very gone. turns out the wheel had just over 1" of play in it. The front disc brakes would keep the wheel straight, but after time, the wobbling of the wheel would push the disk pads apart (i guess this is how the auto-adjustment was reset on this car), and the wheel developed play. Pressing the brake pedal for the first time was interesting - it just readjusted the pads inwards and did nothing to retard the car - a release and reapply was needed. after this the wheel would hold straight for a little while.

doesn't sound exactly the same but sounds similar - something lose on the wheel/hub setup

Well they've picked it up & dropped off a replacement. They called me & said they took it on the motorway for 2 miles & it was fine. I bet my left nut they just hire it out again without even looking underneath it.
