E46 questions

Hi all, I picked up my 2004 330d last night and have a few questions

It seems to have a TAPE player instead of a CD player (the last time I saw one of these was in a 15 year old KA)? Surley this can't be standard on a 2004 car! Especially a BMW! What were they thinking, seriously?

Also I can't seem to find any cup holders anywhere, the manual says they should be in the rear armrest somewhere?

There should be a 6 disc multi changer in the boot, but I am no expert.
Mine is behind a panel in the boot on the left above the wheel arch.

As for cup holders mine has none either.

That's where my CD changer is, with the black thumb screw to open the hatch, slide the front of the CD changer to the right and press the button to eject the cartridge. You may even get free CD's if you are lucky like me!
I also have no cup holders !

That standard fit for a BMW of that age.

As mentioned, if the right box was ticked then you'll have a 6 disc box in the boot.

Cup holders: Have you tried looking in the centre console behind the gearstick? or on the armrest if you have that option?

Cup holders can be bought from BMW they replace the coin tray (usually the standard fit item) behind the gearstick.

E46Zone is a good website for all of your E46 requirments alot of clued up people on there.

I think their inclusion just sums up everything that's wrong with the design focus of modern "sporty" cars.

My Z4 has cup holders, and they creak lots, and are in a stupid place.

I can't believe people actually paid to have them!

Then BMW left in the most retarded standard seats, rather than fitting the sports ones as standard.


BMW's are great, ONCE you get past the cretinous and to be honest, tttish specification system.

They make their cars crap, just so people want to pay to spec them up to make them half nice, but the issue is lots of people then DON'T get the essential options and you have a truck load of crap spec cars kicking around...

No cup holders in mine.

Before you fork out on any ICE upgrades do a bit of research, the standard speakers and even the HK upgrade speakers are st, the head units are also se. You may want to replace all and add in ipod integration at the same time.

I have a tape player in the head unit, but a 6 CD changer in the boot. Not sure on the cup holders; pretty sure I don't have them.

I have the HK upgrade in mine, and I quite like it. It's not as good as the Bose system in the RX8 though.

Our 330D SE didnt have a CD changer when we got it - I though someone had taken it out. I belive that the wiring was put in all of them so you should be able to get one off fleabay and its plug and play (with the fitting kit from a BMW dealer, its about a fiver)

Cd changer is in the boot, if you haven't got one they're always on eBay.
I binned mine in favour of a Dension iPod kit.
Cup holders can be swapped with the sliding covered coin tray behind the gearstick, it just pulls out.
Rear cupholders are in the rear centre headrest which forms the centre armrest when pulled down.

Exactly what happened to my 328 Ci. Done under warranty, but a £3500 repair. I think mine was one ofthe first to go, as the dealership had 6 techies all looking at in in disbelief when it was taken in.
