I want to surprise my friend with the next car purchase. He always baits me with my boring car choices.

What's the cheapest way I can be 'faster' than his 997 Carrera S. On paper it's 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Even if I could even keep up with him it would be a moral victory for me.

So put a top budget on the 'project' of say £4000, and something that will require maintenance but will not implode at the first sign of the Porsche's exhaust smoke.

kit car, it's probably the only way to beat him in the corners and keep up on acceleration while still being reliable.

You might get close with a re-mapped B5 Audi S4, around 320bhp IIRC. Or how about an old Impreza WRX with "mods".

Any classic impreza turbo running 280bhp+ will more than keep up with his Carrera S. Plenty about for £4k.

Depends if he drives like an OAP and has no clutch control(if those have such a gimick as a clutch pedal anymore) then a 1.3 micra should have him :P

Seriously tho, you could go the sleeper approach with a small hatch, stripped out and with a silly power engine or something jap and turbo powered. Are you wanting to outrun him on a straight road or round corners?

£4k of driver training and a twisty road? hehe

A classic impreza is definitely the way to go. I bought a '99 for £2k a couple of years ago which had an exhaust and map, making about 240bhp and it was quick (a fair bit quicker than my r32). They're quite light (1200kg) so 300bhp would make them properly quick.

I just want him to be 'surprised' even if it's once from the lights on a private road.

Buy a Yamaha R1 and then get on his PC and block him from watching the Clarkson video on You Tube of an R1 vs a 996 C4 smile

Seriously though, if you're worried about your car choices being boring, then don't concentrate on speed, concentrate on the car not being boring. There's plenty of interesting metal available for £4k.

Buy an E36 M3 Evo, do basic service, strip everything out of it like side and back seats, sound muffling, spare wheels..etc.. and get practicing your lauches/control. You'll be all over him like a cheap suit car wink
