I've noticed that once the gov. demoilished the idea of 4p increase in fuel tax, shell have put up their cost in Vpower... Around here it is now 140.9ppl, which is nearly 10p difference to normal octane. Its quite a difference for something which used to be only 4-5p diffference, doesnt bother me when its about that, but 10p difference is too much.
I've now started going to Tesco and filling up with their momentum, which is same octane rating, but different additive. I do notice a difference in the two fuels, but tbh, the difference doesnt bother me enough to pay the extra. Momentum is only 5p more expensive than the regular unleaded.
This really begs me to question, why? Why would Shell put themselves in such a vulnerable possition? Supermarket fuels have already taken business from your traditional petrol stations, and now they're starting to do high octane too! Why are they pricing themselves that much away from their competitors? Are they that confident that their "mix" in their high octane give them the ability to do so?
Increasingly driving has become very minimal for me, and I'm driving while looking at the needle. I'm only filling up by £15 each visit as that way, psychologically, I'm driving less. (£15 = roughly 10L which gets me roughly 80-100miles)

What on earth are you driving that requires 99 octane fuel but gets 40-50mpg?

Unfortunately Suzuki Recommend 98Octane, and car does not like it when its not running on it. Get bad economy when not running on it either, which is why I dont really mind paying for 99Ron.
+ Forgot to add, thats when I'm driving like a saint, went through a period of filling up at bang on 20l whenever the light was on (Shell's "fill up min 20l and get double points thing") which got 180miles, but on spirited driving got about 140miles or so. But as a poor as student living on his last £30 till the start of next month, absolutely no spiritted driving would be done, AT ALL!

Haha, it really does But my solution? Driving to uni I take many B roads, I just drive behind the grannies who cant go faster, and refuse to overtake... Haha one of the best ways to save me money on fuel! :P Other than that, only doing 60-65 on the DC is saving me heaps, and I've only been using half throttle, with major difficulty. I just imagine I've got an egg under the accelerator, and if I push too hard it'd splatter all over my car.Jayho said:

Well they've already lost this "loyal" customer within 2 weeks ;P I used to make sure I passed a Shell on my trips to and from uni if I needed to fill up. Now I make sure I pass a Tesco which stocks momentum. Which is annoying as my very local one doesnt stock it, but its ok, the one I pass to uni does! In answer to the OP, Shell will be using this pricing strategy becuase they can charge it, without a huge downturn in sales.

haha, I just know for a fact I cant take it over 4100rpm as I cant afford to! Wouldnt make it to and from uni for the rest of the month! haha. Changing up about 3500 just now, makes a world of difference.Ahh, now it makes sense! I noted that the cost difference between normal unleaded and V-Power at my local Shell station had shot up and wondered if that was the same for everyone? Like other people here, I won't be using V-Power anymore, as my E36 328 can happily take 95 ron and as I'm driving more conservatively these days [300 miles a week will do that to ya] it's not really worth the extra cost. I do use Tesco too.
I use Tesco momentum, car seems to run fine on it. But like you say, I shop in Tesco and get loyalty discount vouchers and cash rewards on a regular basis that can also be spent on petrol. I avoid BP/Shell etc as they are usually more expensive to start with.
Incidentally, filled up in the Tesco garage on Saturday. Some people are really feeling the pinch, guy infront of me put £5 in the tank, some girl in a Fiat Punto put just £2 in, wtf is the point. By the time you have factored in starting and stopping the engine rather than leaving it running, surely that's at least 50pence.

:O dont think thats even allowed. Always notice a sign saying "minimum delivery 2 litres". Maybe she was completely skint, and the £2 was ALL she had left, but is enough for her to get home and ditch the car until daddy comes home to give her money for petrol? Had a friend who was completely skint, not even a penny, she knew she needed petrol, but couldnt buy any, so just set out and drove in the general direction of home until she conked out! haha, then called her mum to rescue her! I have really been feeling the pinch though, I used to either brim it or at least £30 in, now its just £15. I usually get my shell clubcard points turned into fuel off vouchers. Live in a household of 2, so we dont often spend enough to get 5p off at the pumps ect...
