Number Plates that tell a story..

Inspried by the BMW press car thread I just saw.

Are there certain registration marks, that tell a story about a car.

Here is what I know.

Present reg system.

G plate Lexus are Lexus own cars. Kent

K plate is often an on lease Mercedes. Midlands

B Plate cars often Scooby's own cars. Birminham

NK - Northumbria Police tend to use thsi as do lease cars/cars getting private reg removed. Applies to the North East.

The old number plate system.

GV Was a Volvo owned Volvo.

AC - Land Rover fleet press demo cars. Also special vehciles.

HP - The same for Jag.

Any more?

A lot of Morgans I see are VX, could just be a coincidence though!
And I see OV on Audi's quite regularly too

On the old system SVV, MOV were often Rover owned cars.

All the police cars around here use VX and VU.

Even the unmarked ones. Comes in handy.

VX is one of the prefix's for Worcester area reg plates! so if its a factory demo or picked up from the factory it will have one of those!

Yes here in the North East if its NK 08.....or whatever and its an Astra or BMW it'll have cops on board.

In the Highlands there are a fleet of police cars, marked and unmarked, with BAU as the last few letters of the plate. Can be useful!

Almost all Evo's from the 7 onwards have a "WX _" plate because of where they are all registered when imported from Japan.

Cant remember exactly, but I think AU on a lotus, means the car was bought direct from the factory (or something).

A lot of the newer Northumbria traffic 330 Tourings have London plates for some reason.

Is there some sort of Met pool that forces can buy into?

it's quite simple to look at what the first two letters of the current system and the last two letters of the old system actually mean.

It ain't rocket science.

Yes, to me it appears to tell me that the occupants are terrorists, and armed and dangerous, and an airstrike should be called to wipe them out...

The first 2 digit refer to the local DVLA office the vehicle has been registered at, so the 'K' that you are seeing on alot of leased Merc's is probably down the fact that Merc UK HQ is in Milton Keynes, and 'K' cover Luton, MK and Northampton.

AU on a Lotus factory collection ? Quite possibly AU is the prefix for the Norwich DVLA office.

Yes I know how the present - and other system works.

Its not about SJ cars coming from Dumfries for example, just that certain reg numbers are used by certain organisations and are therefore a giveaway about their use/history etc.

For example, if you pass a Subaru dealer, most of the used stock is Birmingham registered.

I have also noticed new Chinese MGs carry VX prefix.

Is there a big leasing company in Peterbrough? I see a lot of A registered cars abound the country.

No suprise there as Subaru HQ is in the West Midlands, somewhere near B'ham airport, nearly new Scooby's are going to be ex-management cars, as are pre reg's etc.
