different size wheels? mot fail?

Is it an mot fail if you have different size wheels front to back? say 14s on the front and 15s on the back.

also what about different sized tyres front to back?

So long as the individual axles match left to right, then you are fine .... Even then, you don't need to have the same brand or tread depth of tyre on said axle, so long as it is the same size.

A fair few cars run larger back wheels. Most RWD have wider tyres too.

As for the new RS3, it has wider tyres on the front!

Wouldn't it confuse the ABS or ESP (if fitted) if you had a different rolling radius from the front to the back? The wheels would be spinning at different speeds.

Indeed. My car runs 175/55/16 at the front and 225/45/17 at the back.

I guess it depends on the calibration of the system in question.

I got told by one garage that my car wouldn't pass MOT with 205 profile tyres on the front and 195s on the back.

I went elsewhere.

Aslong as the ESP is programmed to have different wheels front to back then it would be fine.

I presume the OP is asking whether he can change to different sized wheels? Obviously if the car was designed that way then it won't be a problem.

One thing that really gets on my nerves is garages that invent their own MOT regulations.

Ask them to check in the MOT regs book, that will give them the answer. I have had to do this with some MOT's before.

This also irritates me incredibly, but is not limited to this topic.

AS others have said - no such thing. All Griffiths ran smaller width and diameter's at the front as standard.

I've heard similar. No idea if it's actually true though.
