Why do some people buy convertibles? I've just been following a woman in a nice 60 plate 3 series and she had all four windows down but had the roof up! This isn't the only example, I've seen it loads of times over the last few days! I don't get why you buy a convertible and on a gorgeous day like today, keep the roof up?!!

Maybe she was just poping down the shops and short journey didn't warrant the roof down.

I sometimes, even when its sunny, drive my Elise with the roof on. Mainly due to laziness mind.

Could be. I'm firmly in the hood-down camp usually, but after three days in the Spanish sunshine in the Chimaera I was quite jealous of those with a roof. And air con.

Yep, granted it's her choice.

But (given it's a 60 plate) it was also her choice to spec the most expensive option available and then not use it. Just odd that.

Perhaps prefers to run with the top down out of town on warm evenings when the sun is less direct.

Or she could have had a boot full so no room to drop roof (most bigger cabrios have a section that the roof drops into when folded that is retractable so if you need more boot space it folds up or away giving you more room for luggage or whatever).

The clue is "convertible", it doesn't have to be one or the other, it can be whatever you want it to be at the time.

Maybe she was on the way back to the dealership because the roof was broken? Just saying..
Personally, if i had a soft top i wouldnt want it down if it was just me in the car, looks like your are a showoffee tt.

In the winter you can heat the car.
When you are sitting in a traffic jam in 35 degree sun you can cool down

true, but arn't modern bmw convertibles just one touch jobbies? In your case an Elise roof is like putting up a tent.

Yes it is choice but I just don't see the point personally. Wasn't a short journey either as I was following her for 20 mins ish, could understand if it was a nip round the corner though. Someone said about air con on, all four windows were down so a bit pointless eh?!

Believe it or not, especially when stuck in traffic it can get uncomfortably hot with the roof off. That plus the fact it can also be very hot outside whilst raining at the same time - air con is a must have in any modern car IMHO.

The only time I don't have the roof down, is when it's raining, or when I'm literally only driving 2 minutes down the road, and can't be bothered to take the 2 minutes at each end to put the roof up and down. If I had a new fancy electric roof however, then there would be no excuse.
