Charity "crap car rally" .... anyone done one ?

As the title suggests, has anyone done one ? .....they look like a good laugh and do some good for charity.
A few mates and I are interested in doing a fun event for a charity.
we're considering doing a Scumball,crumball type event.
Anyone know if they are as good as advertised etc ?
any personal experiences ?

Where do you fancy: Prague, Rome, Naples, Romania or Lands End to John O'Groats? Feeling adventurous, New York to New Orleans?
On my 6th event with them this year. Great routes and great people on the events. The event sized have shrunk over the last couple of years but I guess a good part of that is down to the spare cash many people have. £250 car might make it sound cheap but remember getting it roadworthy, MOT, Tax, Insurance, 6 or 7 nights hotels, 1500 miles (more if driving back) of petrol, French tolls, ferry and beer and it soon adds up.
PM me if you want more info (I am not involved with the organisers but I have marshalled events for him).

Our thoughts so far are :
-We need to be able to run big RWD barges with welded diffs
.... so no insurance or engine size limitations.
-Start from the UK and proceed into Europe and finish somewhere relatively close to an airport so if neccesary we can fly back home..... so no America trips etc
-Chav exempt
-Not stuck up about the cheeky powerslide etc (when appropriate)

Quite a few PHers have done our events. You can do it for charity or for yourselves at the end of the day.If you come on ours, the only thing we ask is that all the money you raise goes to the charity and does not cover your expenses (unless your sponsors are aware of that). Some of the practices of our "charity" competitors are very suspect sometimes.
We're also not trying to get a knighthood from our events. We don't brag about how much 'we' raise for charity, so be careful who you choose to go with, and who will be using your efforts for their own promotion. I know at least one organiser who is using the efforts of the teams to promote himself personally. I do not agree with that type of behaviour.
Best any of our events have ever raised was Team AWOL on BABE Rally in 2009 who raised $180k. After that, the teams of S2N2008 probably raised the most at around £70-80k. But the credit entirely goes to the teams.
A few suggestions: 
Take 1 x Rover 800 (as per Alan Partridge)
Seal the laeaking coolant tank with epoxy resin
Decorate appropriately
Drive through France to Switzerland
Up the Alps
Visit the dam in Locarno (of Goldeneye fame)
And jump off...
In the evening check out Vanilla club (very very decent!)
Next day drive over to italy and break down 10 mins after crossing the border
And again on the Autostrada
Make some friends
Nip over to Venice and enjoy the sights
Spend the next day in Verona and see Juliet's House
Eat the local dish of horse goulash!
Drive through the Italian lakes and take in the epic views
Break down again
But enjoy the view
Make it to Austria, spend the night there and the next day head off to Germany. Enjoy these:
In Munich visit BMW HQ
Get drunk at the Oktoberfest

On the way back nip into the Nurburgring

The offical rally was from London-->Laon--->Thun-->Locarno--->Mestre over 4 days. We added a week for Venice, Verona, Munich, Frankfurt, Innsbruck, Brugge.
Car cost £350 with enough t&t. Bought new pads and replaced the brake fluid as well as balancing the wheels. On return to UK, car was scrapped for £130.
Honestly, the best fun I've had. Get some good mates and you will have a ball. Banter galore, stories to tell.

All of ours (except Rat Rod) end near an airport. I would avoid big engined cars personally as they can get quite boring as they cover large distances far too easily, and that's part of the fun gone already.
I know where you are going with RWD as well, but it has it's own issues. Trouble is that your brakes will give out long before you find the limit of the car. Power sliding round hairpins in Switzerland is good fun but after 6 hairpins (up or down) you will over heat your brakes in a bad way. Old brakes are just crap. If the pads don't get red hot, then the disks will, and if that doesn't get you, the brake fluid will boil.
The other problem is that an old barge will just make you seasick after a few corners of tail out. Old barges never had decent sports type of suspension in the first place, and if they did, it's long since gone saggy.
There is also a hangover issue with high performance vehicle in the Alps or Apennines.
If you want the ultimate fun with respect from your peers, buy a proper under powered shed on it's last legs. Or a Citroen BX.

We've added a few things to our events - like the epic water pistol battles (usually in the Alps) and a costume day (like Nuns last year). I think the US rally had Wizard of Oz with more than a few people opting to dress as Dorothy. (In fact, most of the rally did a bit of cross dressing).
But in the past we've had costumes as varied as Clint Eastwood, Cowboys and Indians, Superman, Nuns, St Trinian Girls, The Stig, and a bunch of others I've forgotten.
Next year is our 10th year! lol.

Plymouth Dakar and Staple2Naples were the original banger rallies 3 years earlier? S2N certainly ran first in 2003.
Did the Scumball3000 in 2007 using a Bluebird Turbo.
Nearly didn't even leave Dover, as the French Border officers weren't going to let us on the ferry as they didn't like the look of us. Eventually the event organisers managed to pursuade them to let us through.
Got as far as the morning of day 2, when our campsite in Stuttgart was surrounded by German Police who took offence to the event organisers not arranging 'right of passage' through Deutchland.
After being questioned whether the driver had been drinking or using drugs - which involved breathing into the nose of the German Policeman, and them him looking at your pupils - you drove out onto the street, where they'd coned off a lane and pulled you over. They took our passports and told us our cars weren't allowed in Germany as we hadn't made appropriate arrangements. One particurly burly blonde cop then proceeded to stab a 12" flatbladed screwdriver through the sills on my mates 'Smokey and the Bandit' decorated Porsche 924, and claimed the vehicle would be impounded. He then looked at my Bluey Turbo, kicked one of the wheels, and proclaimed "You're fine!".
However, with mates still under 'roadside' arrest, we couldn't leave though, so after much negotiation, they agreed to return passports and allow both cars on their way if we removed all of the Rally sponsorship stickers and not partake in the event further.
We decided to park up in Stuttgart and spend the weekend at the numerous bars and stripclubs, including a visit to the Porsche and Mercedes Musuems, and left in time to pick up the appropriate

My uni does this each year for charity RAG week, all be it on a much smaller scale, basically a mini version of the Gumball rally. We would set off from uni with our cars stickered up and drive to a set city followed by a big night out. There are normally around 50 cars.
Me and my friend's didn't go down the 'crap car' route and did it in our own cars and in the most recent one a friend's parent's (Defender, my BMW and then a Cayenne). Most people did the same as us, but some did go pick up an old banger.
They were pretty good fun to with friends, although at the most recent one there were quite a lot of police around. I would imagine one of the proper long distance ones would be great fun.
