Evo or Impreza?

I'll soon be turning 21, and with 4 years no claims, id like to get something nice and fast.
I have a 10k budget
Ive driven an Evo 8 and Blobeye Impreza Sti, both with around 300bhp, and i cant make my mind up which to get.

I know that there is a big debate between the two, but my main concern is reliability and cost of running.
Is there a clear winner between the two in these aspects?

Which would you recommend?

Scooby. It's distinctive sounding and different (well...relative to the Evo anyway). Definately a cult car.

Running costs and reliability. Take the Impreza. I had mine 4 years, it cost me 4 services, a battery, 4 tyres, and discs and pads. My mates evo cost him alot more.

Officially i think the Scoob is 10k service intervals as opposed to 5k in the EVO. I think both are inherently reliable (given that its been looked after and isnt a lemon from the factory). I remember reading many years ago that the Evo 8 was not the best setup factory cars and the Evo 9 was a lot better (something to do with the boost pressure and delivery if that helps your google).

True but i have owned my Evo 6 from new (11 years) and had not one major cost other then routine stuff

Well done you.

He is looking at an evo 8 so if memory serves me correctly the AYC needs a fluid change every 4.5k? Which makes the Impreza a more realistic proposition from a running cost perspective.

To the OP, they are probably both as reliable as each other (assuming you dont get a lemon).

Having owned both, although older models. The EVO was a lot more reliable, the Impreza was cheaper to service though.

Impreza for a daily car, an Evo for limited miles on weekends.

Just do your homework on running costs and common faults.

I would say they are both reliable, however the Scoob easily wins out on servicing costs and part costs. I'd love to have an Evo but 4,500 miles between services doesn't appeal.

Budget at least 4 of your 10k for insurance, these cars are not cheap to run so you'll need a decent budget for fuel and servicing.

Great cars though, I went for the impreza based on the service schedules really, the evo needs looking at every 6k miles which is a bit too frequent for the mileage I do.

If you don't care about the lovely sound of the scoob and the servicing cost of the Evo. Get the Evo. Ex blobeye(MY05 version) owner here.

I thought it was almost impossible to insure imprezas or evos below 30 years of age...?

Insurance is going to be horrific i reckon at 21 regardless of how many ncb. The first question i always without fail get asked now when getting an insurance quote is 'what have you owned like this before' ?

My girlfriend who is 25 with about 6 yrs ncb cant even get covered on the tuscan im about to get and also struggled to get quotes on a s2000 (modified tbh).

Anyway my preference is the evo, much more exclusive, scoobs are common round here, i personally don't like the suburau sound, it almost sounds fake to me for some reason.

Servicing imo isnt a problem, its not that expensive really, especially if you get a proper one with no ayc. Something like a 6rs is very basic and will go up or at least maintain value too.

Owned a modded P1 and now got an Evo 9. Loved the P1 but the newage scoobies didn't interest me, not as powerful out the box (ie no fq 340/360/400 equivalent), too understeery, not as advantaced awd (no acd/sayc etc) and not as easy to tune either. The scooby may be the more comfortable day to day car but the evo is the better performance machine. Pretty similiar running costs too, the 4.5k service for the 9 is just a simple fluid change and i reckon the evo engines are more bullit proof especially compared to the 2.5litre scoobs. If it has to be a scoob get a classic cos they're lighter and feel very quick and look a lot better looking than the bug/blob eyes. Saying that I'm sure you won't be disappointed with a newage, they're great cars and the flat four sounds fantastic imo

I've just run a confused.com check and it's only £2000 for a 21 year old to insure, thought it would be a lot more.

Audi S2. . Not as many around and probably cheaper to insure.
