...It's 8pm Good Friday, your driving along an arrow-straight road, fields surrounding (no houses), no one walking, no animals around and no one driving on the other side of the road. You therefore decide to overtake two cars in one pass, which you're closing on at the time. If one of those overtaken cars (the one at the front, as it happens) decides to blow their horn repeatedly, whilst flashing lights at you as you pass, what possible reason could there be for this??
This is a true (albeit short) story of something which happened to me, and has been bugging me since. I know I wasn't in the wrong by overtaking, I have never questioned that. Overtaking is a perfectly acceptable maneuver if done safely. I wasn't speeding either. I simply cannot understand the thinking behind someone deciding to do something like that. Quite dangerous really. Any ideas?

Ooo Oo!! I know I know!!..This being pistonheads - the lead car is obviously full of super model chicks, they are in admiration of your multiple company directorships, they merely want to gain your attention and probably call on your extensive automotive knowledge to ask 'What Car' should they be buying next.
That, or they want to launch a redbull can in your general direction for simply making progress.

I've started to notice a lot of overtake 'flashers' recently.
I guess I can understand the odd pensioner flashing when you overtake them because they're doing 40 in a 60 as they have lost the ability drive at night and everything scares them. But I've been surprised to notice people doing it on the motorway when your only doing about 10mph more than them.

The only thing I can think of is that they were trying to get your attention to tell you that something was wrong with your car (Something broken/hanging off etc etc..) but I doubt it, they are probably part of the Speed Kills brigade.

t that blinded me in my rearview mirror with his full beam for a mile when I safely overtook him.I'm afraid its the level of driving nowadays, and the ever increasing number of high torque diesels + generally powerful but heavy cars on the roads nowadays. With your average family hatch still packing say 130BHP from a TDI lump with plenty of torque ect, there isn't that many opportunities to practice the great manouver of overtaking on B roads ect.
Added to the fact that drivers are less aware and competant than a few years ago, a overtaking manouver has now become very rare, so rare that its a complete surprise to some when it happens. Therefore they do everything under the sun to try and tell you you are wrong.
Increasingly annoys me on country roads where you're following someone who slows down too much for the corners, but have enough power under the bonnet to make it back up to 60 to prevent you from overtaking. I end up probably wasting fuel cos I've had to slow down to their level for the corners.

I had the same sort of thing last night. Pratt decided to do 30mph in a 60 area so I overtook him and slotted in behind the guy infront of him. Then for no reason the plonker decided to sit inches off my rear bumper for no reason and then a quick dab of brake light and he backed off.
Same way that I had to emergency stop yesterday because some bloke decided he would pull out of his parking space on the side of the road without indicating... and then glared at me.
Or the woman who, after I had stopped at traffic lights when I was right turning, started waving her arms at me and shouting its my right of way, to which I replied, I know...that's why I'm not moving.

I got full beams once, blindingly so, after a perfectly safe overtake. I stopped by the side of the road to let the glare settle and ended up following the car into the village where it turned out we both lived.
When asked, civilly, why he had done this - IIRC "Can I ask why you turned on your full beams as I passed you?", the driver spluttered that I had "put his child in danger" and that "there was a 30 mph speed limit around that corner" (some 150 yards ahead of the completed overtake, and around which I stopped).

Drving along yesterday on a dual carriageway in a line of cars making decent progress in lane 2,with lane one very busy.Small hatch pulls straight out in front of me,no indicator, in a move that literally makes her little car wobble,making me push very hard,(but not slam) on the brakes.Realising it's a young girl,and I'm relaxed in my barge I don't remonstrate, simply back off to leave a braking distance again.She then pulls back in,and as I go past, I don't even look over and yet she sticks her middle finger up in full view of my 9 year old daughter.
