Planning an impromptu trip to France-any tips on what I need-such as european cover, warning triangle etc?

Do I need my insurance certificate and drivers licence or will my passport suffice?

How can you plan a impromptu trip?

Yes to all of the above, from memory: insurance certificate (mine has a French translation on it). Obviously European cover if it's not automatic on your policy. Triangle, high viz vest, spare bulbs, GB sticker or plates, headlight deflectors if driving at night. European break down cover might be a good idea too.
