life after lotus

Hello Pistonheads, I have been following the site and forum for many years and only recently made the jump to forum membership.
I require your assistance with my dilemma. Due to family increasing in size, the wifelet is forcing me to chop in my beautiful Lotus Elise and my daily drive to move to one vehicle.
I have to find a vehicle that has reasonable running costs, has a reasonable boot and at least 4 if not 5 seats and provide as much enjoyment as possible as my Lotus Elise has. We will also be selling my current small daily drive hack, so this replacement car will be needed as a daily drive additionally.
In short, it must be fast, fun, practical, low running costs and cost no more than around £20,000 being as new as possible.
Have you any tips or advice to my plight?

The fuel will be a bit much, but a VXR8 may be just what you're after. Cheap to run (bar fuel), playful handling, lots of power, loads of space and kiddie proof. You can get one nearly new for your budget too
quite an interesting suggestion, my other concern would have been insurance, but that is coming in at the same figure as my Lotus was, £650.£20k is a fairly big budget for what I would call my family car imo.. BUT

Mmmm - I can't really see an RX8 being a good choice with the 'family increasing in size'.
Babies needs lots of junk as well as an extra seat and the RX8's not gifted with a huge boot. It'll do for a weekend away for 4, but add in buggies and other baby stuff and it's going to struggle.

I think of the RX-8 as having quite a big boot - I guess it's a matter of perspective, I'm used to my Elise. I did this exercise 3 yrs ago when my Elise had to go and unfortunately nothing compares !
You have to decide what your priorities are and make the most of what you can get.
From my experience so far...
Handling and grin factor similar to Elise = Mini surprisingly good fun but the cooper S likes a drink.
Space refinement handling (sort of) = Some sort of powerfull Audi estate S4 S6 etc these are fantastic family cars with the ability to have fun in on your own. But no Elise feedback etc
If in any way you can keep the Elise as a plaything and get a decent family car for not so much money then do that.

Give it a go amongst all the obvious test drives, it just might float your boat. Anything german might just be too refined (read bland) for your tastes at the moment!Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
