How are these (still) legal?

Travelling down the M6 today a Volvo 760 passed me with the extra seats in the boot. The car was fully loaded with two little bundles of joy smiling and waveing out of the rear window.
Now with all the safety devices in cars, air bags, side air bags, crumple zones etc if something hit the back of that car at any speed...well it doesn't even need saying.

I grew up in the seventies riding in the boot of Cortina estates and Land Rovers with no roof or back seats. As you can imagine, we were all killed in horrible accidents most weekends.

So what happens if something hits the side of a car at any speed? Does that need saying? I used to go on family holidays in a converted Commer van, sat on a sideways foam bench seat with no seatbelts. People need to stop worrying.

Lol, I remember many a trip to Alton Towers with 4 kids in the load space of some Leyland crapster estate, totally unrestrained and having a whale of a time. How is it anymore dangerous then an MPV with seats that are located even closer to the rear window then in the Volvo.
Do you put your children in the car with crash helmets or am I going to have to call the social services and report you for evil parenting by putting your children in danger. By the way don't let your kids out on their bikes or go skiing either, its certain death.

My brother and I used to fight over who could lay on the parcel shelf of the old man's PA Cresta on a long trip.

Yep we died most weekends too as the old man ran a Citroen BX estate - itself made of nothing more substantial than paper mache in the crumple zones to begin with - the boot of which contained an old ( brown velour no less ) seat from a mini. Not as good as a Volvo but it did the job, carting us around, not exactly H+S compliant but we really do need to stop being so ultra cautious about everything.
Also having seen the way some of the modern, ready made people carriers are driven on the roads with so little regard for those around them - suspect the drivers are taking for granted the multiple air bags that surround them will save thus allowing themselves to become distracted from the task of driving. Maybe if people drove their precious cargo around in vehicles with less than perfect safety features they would take more care...just a thought.

The fact that the main manufacturers in Europe to fit rear facing seats are the two who have built their reputations on passenger safety. (And I don't mean Montegos or even the rare Audi 7 seaters.) I've always assumed they must be ok,my spoilt brats would never go for them though,would make them travel sick apparently, hence having about ten f
