Tyre Question.. might be silly

Can you run a different brand of tyres on the front and on the rear of a car?

I cant for the life of me find a set of rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 265-30-19s for my D3 at a reasonable price - they have rocketed.

I have read rave reviews about the Continental 5P's which are over £100 each cheaper.

Would this have an adverse affect? The fronts are Michelins (235/35s)

I will change the fronts to Contis when they wear out

Of course you can. My car currently has different brands on front and rear..

Also won't effect performance unless you've made stupid choices..

Yes of course you can. Might not be a good idea to swap them diagonally so that there is a new and an old on the front, but I'll leave that for you to decide.

what the poster is saying it do not have odd tyres/makes/sizes etc on the same axle

as in Dunlop on Front and Bridgestone on Rear

Huh? Axles traditionally go from left to right.

of course you CAN have different makes/brands of tyre on either side!!!

Whether it's ideal is questionable but it's certainly allowable.

as others have said, yes you can have different tyres on a single axle (i.e. one brand for rear tyres and another brand for the front tyres. just don't have one brand for front right and another for front left.

you can have any make on any wheel as long as they are the same size on any given axle, i have 4 differant brands on one vehical and it's passed the mot every year for 7 years but they are all the same size (and tread pattern as it happens) on the axles.
Not ideal by any measure but leagal.

I run four different brands of cheapo chinese crap on my station snotter, because it's only 3 miles away and I couldn't give a toss what happens to it in the car park.

Even bought part worns for it in the past

Well the OP has 19's so without looking what car he has, I'd presume that wants at least half decent tyres?

It is 'acceptable' to have a pair of the same up front and a different pair on the rear. Your suggestion in the OP is absolutely fine.

Apparently you shouldn't mix tyres on the same axle but tbh in 99% of the population and 99% of situations I suspect it would not make a blind bit of difference.

When I bought my E30 it had 4 different brands of tyre. I have however lived to tell the tale. Now has a new pair of Kumho Ku31s on the back, the fronts however are still different (one Fate-O and one Goodyear).
