Take it how you like - point-to-point, 0-60, around a track - but anything shockingly fast for the money. I wonder what exists? Surprise me

Don't resent me or students generally because of this thread. I cannot actually do this. I need my loan and the accompanying support grant to live on this next term, and if I were to spend this money on a car I'd have to half-empty a long-term savings account to cover the shortfall. It is not something I can do on a whim because my family's rich - quite the reverse, hence the grant - or because I'm a typical piss-money-up-the-wall student waster.

I did, however, see that figure on my balance as a very nice car-buying sum, so thought I'd let you guys see what fun you could have with it! So fire away

I knew someone would be in with a bike soon, you were faster than I expected it needs to be a car! No point impulse-buying something I'm not licenced for/capable of using without killing myself..

I thought about an E36 328i, actually, on finding that there wasn't a shagged enough M3 in the land to be within budget! But we'll wistfully forget insurance for this, say I could cover that by selling the Audi, and use as much of the £2300 as you want.

I bet there are plenty 540is around, thinking BMW..

Heh, I like it. I had a guy in at work with a T5 that was making an alleged 320bhp.. He didn't look like he had 2d to rub together, but major respect for the giant-killing stealth wagon!

And hey, I only do 6k a year, so this sounds like a two-year plan to me!

..Do turbo/super kits exist for the 328i? You could get a decent base car with a grand of change..

But much as I love the big Jags - could you get classier? - I don't much fancy the idea of a slushmatic auto. And I'd be looking at the 3.2 cars, wouldn't I?

Are the Coupes really that good to drive? Hear talk of them being one of the best front-drive chassis around..

Though I know which I'd rather turn up somewhere in!

ETA - It's hard to say much against THIS much car for the money, auto barge or not..

It's worth mentioning, though, that I do pay my own way completely at uni, and this is therefore mostly hypothetical. Unless something seriously excellent turns up, in which case I'll be digging into the building society "it's for a deposit on a house" account to survive this next term

No, you want the supercharged 4.0 6 - Auto and manual are out there.

Mmmmm.. I found a similar car above. Very very nice indeed. How do they drive? I hear they ride exceptionally well and do all the Jag luxuryness you'd expect.

Fair enough. I suppose with this sorta thing you can get lucky or hilariously (for others) unlucky. It could be a tidy one that's been mostly looked after, or it could be ragged to hell and in dire need of a clutch, at least one turbo and most of its suspension components!

They have serious potential, though. Something you could run with 50bhp more every year to keep it interesting!
