Realistically, you're talking about a diesel euro-box with those requirements. Probably an oldish BMW as suggested above.

A mk3 Toyota MR2 would get pretty close.

Does mpg even matter in it's own right? I'm going to suggest it doesn't...

Surely you only have a 0-60 second acceleration requirement and a set amount of money to buy (fund your part of the depreciation curve over the time you plan to own it), maintain, repair, fuel and tax a car over an estimated number of miles each year.

Do the calculations this way and I reckon the car you will end up with could be far more interesting when viewed liked this.

What about a Fiesta ST? 7.9 secs but seems to be 38.2mpg combined and probably get a nice low milage one for ~6k?
