I don't understand insurance prices - I really don't!
Discussion
Driver Male, Mid 40's, 1 SP30 - Norfolk - 16 yrs NCB one accident in last 5 years (all losses recovered got hit by a drunk pole) - sole driver
Cars stored on drive overnight not garaged (need to keep my Opels and Vauxhalls from disolving somehow)
Earlier this year I got some stupid four figure quotes on a 99 BMW 740 value £2500 eventually got it down to a sensible (in my eyes) £470 Fully comp 3000 miles a year but it's a group 18 from memory with a big repair bill likely in the event of an accident so I don't expect to get insured for buttons but it made me realise just how much prices have been jacked up
In January I renewed the 2001 Polo GTi value £1500 (3000 miles a year) it had gone up by £50 (ish) OK its a hot ish hatch and group 12
So looking at replacing the Polo with a 2001 Merc SLK230 same age (she fancies a change)
- nearly 3 times the value
- plus I reckon Merc parts costs are on a par with BMW in the event of an accident
- Insurance group 17
so I expected a £150-£200 increase or something close to that
Rings broker price to cover new car for remainder of the policy (8 mths) - just an admin fee £20
I really don't get it, sure I'm happy but I oooh so just don't get it

Went from a 115bhp diesel alfa 147 to an Audi TT 225bhp. Bell wanted a £15 admin fee and that's it!
It is a silly old world. I'm up for renewal next week, Let's see what they hit me with! The renewal for the 147 was £800 and they charged me £900 for the TT last year!
Well that's as silly as mine...... Makes me think you were paying over the odds for the Alfa - just like I now feel I was paying way to much for the PoloIt is a silly old world. Looking forward to one of the resident PH insurance experts putting me straight as the more I think about it the more I think the premium is heavily weighted to statistics based on the cars
2001 Polo GTi (first hot hatch for the younger VW enthusiast - more likely to end up backwards in a hedge so premium loaded accordingly)
2001 Merc SLK230 (blue rinse driver never goes over 50 so little or no accidents)
Problem I have is driver is me and the car doesn't go out on it's own - surely this should be the largest factor in the premium!!!!

I renewed yesterday, did the wife at the same time (so to speak) on a multiple vehicle policy, we have similar details and similar premiums but I'm allowed to drive other cars 3rd party and she isn't, all down to our occupations apparently, although we're both office based, very queer...

I think certain cars have an image and a 147 and a Polo GTi are going to be driven by a certain type of person!
