Fiesta 1.4/1.6 TDCI alternatives

Quite simply, what other cars should be considered that can challenge the fiesta for being a reliable and cheap car for the drive to work and back?

The fiesta can return around 60mpg on motorway runs, is 30 quid to tax for the year and cheap to insure. Decent ones can be had for around the 5k mark

Had a number of Fabia courtesy cars when I had octavias, from asthmatic to vrs, and the 1.4tdi was the most enjoyable. Felt more like an old 8v petrol, certainly worth a look.

Failing that, same lump, Audi A2 is "interesting"?
