Any experience of exporting a car VAT free to South America?

Apparently those nice people at HMRC allow you to do it if:
The car is going outside the EU forever
You are going with it (outside the EU) for more than 6 months

They have a special note on the HMRC website called notice 705

We are planning that ultimate road trip in a Land Rover, want to go along the Pan American from Darien gap to Tierra del Fuego. Maybe we'll turn around and head for Alaska at the end - or maybe we'll get divorced and flog the car! At least there'd be lots of scope for side trips up Chimborazo Volcano (highest point sticking into space on earths surface) and along the Bolivian road of death - etc!!!

We have heard that there's a lot of new LHD Land Rover Defenders parked up at Farnboro airfield. Apparently they were part of an MoD / UN order, that got blown out by the cutbacks. Me and the missus would like to get our hands on one for the trip.

Anyone know where to buy one under notice 705, and save the good old 20% VAT?

Generally; Has anyone here ever managed to export a vehicle under this dispensation?

Wouldn't it be easier, and cheaper, to just rent something when you are out there. Look at the importing regulations of the countries you are visiting, you might not be able to sell the car.

Thanks for the thought, but we are more or less are pretty certain that we can sell a decent Land Rover without much problem, and maybe make something on the deal. In any case renting a Land Rover over there for trans-national use would cost probably around a thousand dollars a week. Car Hire In S America is way less developed than in Europe...
