Skoda fabia vrs v. Skoda Octavia vrs estate v. Mazda 3 mps.

I'm thinking of buying a new car later on this year and got it down to 3 choices:

Skoda Fabia vrs or Skoda Octavia vrs Estate or Mazda 3 MPS

I'm just interest in people's views, comments and experiences of these cars, both good and bad.

3 very different cars.

What do you want to do with the car? Beyond driving it that is - i.e. do you have kids, a dog, a caravan to tow? Do you mainly drive A roads or motorways, or more in town driving?

Each car there is a very good car with a good reputation but the Mazda is more of a performance car than the other 2 but maybe the others are easier to live with day to day. The 2 Skoda choices are very different in terms of practicality and the Octavia has a good diesel version which might be better suited if you do more miles.

Drive them all if you can would be the first piece of advice.

Depends what your criteria are? Size vs economy vs practicality vs performance?

I ran a Fabia vRS and liked it as an every day car, but ultimately it was a bit boring.

I ran an Octavia vRS as my last company car and run a Fabia vRS as my current company car (for tax efficiency reasons).

I should stress that I have NOT driven the Mazda, however.

Unless you need to dave the money, I's suggest you narrow your choice to the Octavia vRS or the Mazda, and the decision will then be made on the basis of performance vs. practicality. The Octavia vRS estate is a very competent all-rounder, with adequate performance, but the handling is a bit stodgy (albeit very predictable) and it's pretty dull to look at (which I saw as an advantage - it doesn't attract unwanted attention).

The Fabia vRS is a competent and quick little car, but it's never going to be as practical as the Octavia or as quick as the Mazda and you'll really have to love the DSG gearbox to bond with it: I don't, so I haven't.

I'm very tempted by them. If you want something that's quirky, practical, quick and DSG but without being enormous (as the Octavia is) then it seems a very nice choice.

It's still the DSG box, which is very much an acquired taste. If most of your driving experience has been on a Playstation or Xbox, you can't H&T and are incapable of deciding for yourself what gear you want, you may love it...

But beyond that, the Fabia estate simply isn't big enough to make a huge difference to practicality over the hatchback: if you need something between the Fabia hatch and the Octavia in volume, then the Mazda would give you that?

I looked at the Fabia estate but ultimately went for the hatch for this reason... and I personally thought the estate looks ugly and dumpy even by Skoda standards.

As been said above there very different cars depends what your after?

I have a mazda 3 mp mk1 aero and for the money as ive said before i dont think they can pick a newer better spec quicker hot hatch up it really is value for money, the only downside with it is the tax band but its well worth it
