Window question on the new McLaren

You know, I always wondered, look at the passenger and driver window on the new McLaren, and other cars that have windows like it, where it looks like it is a frame within a frame, like 2 windows. How do they open? Is it only the bottom half? If so, thats extremely restrictive, and what is the point? Why cant there be a whole window?

I expect you've gone to bed now; but I don't know what you are talking about. From all the pictures I've seen the door glasses appear to be single, full height ones.

What you're referring to is cars which have smaller windows within the window. the reason they have them is that the window has to wind down into the door and that may not be possible in more extreme designs because of the shallowness of the door, air intakes in the door and the angle of the glass in relation to the door. It allows the design to be more radical or extreme as glass is harder to adapt to such designs.

For example, the rear windows of many saloons don't wind down fully as the wheelarch is in the way - unless they put in a quarter light which is an added security risk.

As above, the glass wouldn't retract fuly into the door if it was bigger.



No moving windows on the race version (Yes I realise this is XP1 LM but the point is valid)

I did fall asleep, but yes I meant the f1. Thank you for posting the pics fellas, that is exactly what I am refering to. So, its only that little window that goes down? It must get really cramping feeling inside wouldn't you think!!!

Yep.

McLaren would have sold more F1's, but for this design flaw.

Prospective buyers were put off by this atrocious oversight.

Well, that and the fact that there was such a long way for the driver to reach across to get to the window winders.

indeed, but I think given the interior of these and the fact you're supplied with headsets so you don't go deaf and can speak to passengers, theres other pressing matters on their mind
