Apart from a possible insurance saving on a car, he will be able to drive legally on the road at 16, and help me with the allotment/tip runs.

What is not to like about getting a 16 year a tractor for their birthday?

Or have I got this all wrong?

and don't mention the cheap red diesel

Depends where you live hehe

You won't have to tax the thing either, AFAIK.

Sem to recall a lot of accidents with 16 year olds and tipping tractors when I was a lad.

Whomever you you have the rest of your farm machinery/ farm insured by will cover his use when working farm business.

A tractor taxed as an agricultural vehicle (nil rate, but needs to show a disc!) may use red diesel on the road for agricultural use. Therefore your tractor needs to be properly registered and show a number plate etc.

Theres a limit on the size of tractor and trailer a 16 year old can drive.

No farm I'm afraid, could I insure the allotment as a smallholding?
