Insurance Comparison Sites and The Real Cost Of Insurance...

Anyone ever actually bought from these sites ?
I've used them as a reference over the last few years to bargain with my current insurer, knowing usually things like MLP or PNCB have been left off the quote to boost the price, but today I found a new tactic !
This company appeared at the top of the results on more than one site. No naming and shaming so I'll call them "Trafalgar" (as in the battle of..), their quote was a decent chunk better than all the rest but didnt include MLP which was an extra £26.99 or so - adding that in they were still about 7-8% better than my next best quote so far.
So I thought, reputable company, reputable name, well established, I'll have some of that. Also found a cashback offer for them on a cashback site I use...... so ran though the quote again via that, same questions, same answers given... but it wouldnt let me complete the policy online.
A quick call later and I was speaking to someone who took the reference and said they would get the price for me.....
Came back with a price that was 133% higher than originally quoted! I asked why and they said the comparison site was just a "guide price".
What a load of old crusty cock!
Looks like I'll be sticking with "Large Mammal Usually of African or Indian variety" for my renewal again this year.... unless Flux actually call back when they say they will..

Large Mammal, is owned by Battle of Trafalgar. So they should be able to beat the quote.
As reference to the quote thing, i did the same, quote on line, then ring them.
What you need to do is ring up and straight away state that you have received a quote online but before you purchase there are a few alterations you would like them to make that it wouldnt allow online, then quote the ref number.
I also use Battle of Trafalgar insurance.

It's not a guide price, it's a quote. Should have kicked up a fuss. I'm with the Land Mammals still because they're consistently the cheapest, they answer the phone quick and the assistants answer my questions and are polite. Don't know what they're like in the event of a claim and hopefully won't need to find out. As for the Four Letter Rate of Change of Flow of a Gas or Liquid, they recently quoted me 50% more than the Land Mammals. I declined so now, once a month, they send me a letter saying "We see your insurance is up for renewal..." Yes, that's right, I've been driving illegally for four months just in case you get back to me with a better rate. Idiots.
I should clarify that "Battle of Trafalgar" is not to be confused with "Commander of a Fleet".
Maybe if I called BoT "Ten Sixty Six" instead that might clear it up

Cant complain price wise overall think at £220 thats about £7 less than last year. The joys of turning 30 on my renewal date probably helped! As well as driving a 68bhp French Baguette on wheels.

Nice to hear a positive insurance quote, this forum seems to be full of people moaning about getting scammed.
I had the opposite experience.
After 1 year of driving i got a 1.6 and all quotes where at minimum £1500. But one comparison site had a broker i have never heard of come up at about £800. I went directly to the website and tried again and it dropped to about £790. So i then rang them and the guy on the phone got it down to about £770!
Renewal this year was £900 though :S. With the same broker and the same insurer. It was still the cheapest i could find.
