Buying a car for my partner

Hi everybody,

I have decided to treat my partner to a Mk2 MX-5. I am hoping to buy one as a surprise for her but I have come to a hurdle.

If I buy private (which most cars for sale are) then she would have to sign the V5 for the car to be in her name. Obviously I can't get her to do this otherwise it wouldn't be much of a surprise. Is there any way round this?

You don't have to sign the V5 immediately upon purchase. Just take your part of it with you and leave it blank so she can sign it.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I thought there was a part that we have to sign for the seller to keep and send off in the post?

Just complete it in her name. Explain it to the seller, I doubt they would have a problem with that
