MK 3 Capri - Audio ... where to start?!?

Hello there!

I've recently purchased some replacement 4x6's for the front door panels which are doing an ok job (spec below) but I'm wondering how I can improve the sound quality without going down the road of amp's and subwoofers e.t.c.

I've still got the original radio in place, which is probably the most obvious place to start, but I'm not sure what I should be searching for. The main things I'm looking for in a new radio are; that the sound is of a good quality, there is a headphone jack (to plug an iphone in) and that I don't have to cut the original dash e.t.c. I believe I would need a special lead connection between the orignal ford wiring and any new radio...?

Also, I think there has been a splitter install by a previous owner that splits the sound from front-to-back, whould this affect the wiring layout/radio wiring?

I also understand that the original wiring loom is 26yrs old, so would it be worth repalcing it if I'm replacing the radio?

Probably a very simple topic for most people but any help would be greatly appreciated!! (All have to start somewhere hey!)
