Looking for some advice over this one.

Honda Prelude, developed increasing stiffness between gears to the point where rev matching was required to allow a change.

Called the Honda dealer, explain I think its the clutch but ask what they advise and costs to supply and fit a new clutch. They suggested that it might be the hydraulics and asked if they could look at the car. After looking at it and changing the fluid in the clutch they said it was the hydraulics and they would need to order parts, due to the earthquake they were not sure what the delivery times would be but would know when the parts were ordered how quickly they would be able to get them. They said they would call me when they knew a timescale on the parts to book the car in.

A week went by, heard nothing called them to be told "yes we have the parts here sir, would you like to book it in". Now somewhat anoyed booked it in and they carried out the work this Tuesday, costing £100 less then there original quote for a clutch. On getting the car back it was initially better although not quite right, but after about 20/30 shifts it was back to its former state. Called them and asked advice, they said could be the pressure plate on the clutch and quoted me £100 more then there original clutch quote to put a new clutch in.

Having been to see them to complain this whole situation, they tell me "sorry sir there is nothing we can do".

'Fustrated' is not the word!!

In summery,

  • New clutch will be £550 sir, but its the hydraulics, will be £450
  • Will order parts and call you to book it in when we know on supply times.
  • No call, call them to be told, parts delivered would you like to book it in?
  • After new parts fitted (£450 later) fault is initially improved but soon returns to former state on the drive home.
  • Phone them to let them know and am told it could be the pressure plate it'll be £650 for a new clutch.
  • Return to complain at the poor service, miss diagnosis and unexplaind cost increases, to be told "thats just how it is.
Where do I go from here, what would you do?

Advice appreciated.

Never, ever go to a dealer when you require work on your car, unless it's under warranty, and even then I wouldn't recommend it. HTH

They have to replace the clutch again? IMHO they should knock something off the labour for wrong diagnosis.

The problem is that, in my experience, many dealers are "parts fitters" rather than mechanics. They do what the computer tells them, rather than relying on years of experience with cars in general.

Are there Honda specialists?

That`s because the workshops in these places are now like youth clubs, they don`t have the staff with years of experience as those that do have it have long left main dealer circles.

The oldest and senior tech at my local VW dealership is 22-23.

I sometimes think that there are no real mechanics left in the world. I have sorted out more issues with a few spanners and the help of Internet forums than most garages ever did.

Firstly, assuming you've complained to the Service Manager, call and ask to book an appointment to see the Dealer Principal, explain your situation and ask him how he proposes to resolve it.

If they refuse to book you an appointment, or you are unhappy with the outcome, complain to Honda UK.

You could call the AA/ RAC if you're a member and they may give you advice about your rights.

I guess you don't go to the doctor when you're ill either. Those herbal remedies on ebay are so much cheaper.

They're supposed to be the experts - at the very least they should refund the cost of the work they did which didn't resolve the problem.

+1

Ozzie I know what you are trying to say, but the message illustrates a Total Ignorance of the garage scene and how main dealers approach problem solving on cars.

BTW: You may wish to Google for the number of people damaged by prescription drugs and mis-diagnosis by doctors, despite that however a doctor is so far beyond qualified compared to a main dealer mechanic it just magnifies how far out of their depth most main dealer mechanics are.
