Idiot question about exhaust backbox

I have a large hole in the backbox and am due to get it replaced early next week. In the meantime, can I patch it up with any kind of tape. It's at the furthest end from the engine so easy to access but will masking tape just melt, burst into flames and burn the whole of Surrey?

The sound is awful (or awesome if you're a chav; I noticed some chavs eyeing my car up thinking I was trying to impress them). It's as if there's just the cat and mid-section silencer. It's not a nice sound (unless you're a chav).

Thoughts?

Don't use masking tape.

It will work at quite high pressure as well as temperature so tape is unlikely to do it. Not really worth temporarily fixing IMO. Get a cap and give a nod to the chavs for a few days.

Flatten out an empty baked bean tin and hold it in place with a couple of big fk off jubilee clips

Halfords or any car motor factors will sell you some exhaust repair tape and/or sealant to perform an affective repair.

I used something like that before (they also do one for more awkward angles).Seemed to do the job.Btw, this hole, it's not right on the end is it? That one is supposed to be there

Sadly not. It's on the box on the lower side. I have an MOT next week so will need a new box...... will this tape mean it passes the MOT?

I think I'll hit the local motor factors tomorrow. I say hit, I don't mean assault him. That said, if I did, he might let me have the tape free of charge.

That one is steel and..."Manufactured to meet MOT regulations".

Depends where your hole is and how well it fits I guess...(That's the second time I have said that.Been with her 20 years now)

If the rest of the system is good and you can seal it it "should" go through might be an advise only re condition.

It's right on the edge where the ends fit over the cylinder; the hole is on the curved cylinder.
