Rover 75-Boring I know!

Bloke at work spoutting off his usual bull s**t incorrectly about cars and bikes. Anyway, he was just looking at a Rover 75 2.0d (2000 model) saying that it used the same engine and running gear that the same age Ford Mondeo used.

A quick google search cannot find anything to prove this correct or otherwise.
Perhaps he's finally got something right?
Any thoughts?

Its a BMW unit iirc. Hes getting mixed up with the 75 V8 which used a ford mustang 4.6 maybe?

No, it doesn't. It uses much the same engine as the BMW 320d from the era and the chassis is basically unique to the car.

He's wrong, Rover were in bed with BMW at the time and it shares quite a few bits with the e39 BM. Engines are all K/KV6 series variants. Don't know who made the diesel engines, though.

Apart from the 75 kinda sorta looking like an Xtype Jag, which did share a platfrom with the Mondeo, I think he's got his facts backwards.

^This. He's confused the 75 with an X-Type.

Are you sure? totally different engine configurations - longitudinal vs transverse mounting?

It uses a BMW M47R - pretty much exactly the same engine as in a 320d, albeit with a different turbo and mounted differently (because the BMW is RWD, the 75 is FWD).

Most of the electricals come from BMW too... theres nothing there from a Mondeo (or even a Ford) at all.

It is the same engine. I think the only difference was the unit has a variable vane turbo when fitted in a BMW. It was also in the Freelander Td4. Not sure about the gearbox.

I think it had a different injection system. The gearbox is a Jatco unit, developed especially for it.

It also lacks the 320d variable vanes in the inlut manifold. Which is a blessing, as thats a documented weak point on that engine. Also, the Rover gets the Mitsubishi turbo, which is practically unheard off to fail, again, unlike the BMW. Usually 'turbo failure' is diagnosed by mongs who cant recognise that the engine breather (it lives underneath the engine injector wiring harness) needs changed. A £50 fix.

Odd that in trying to hobble the car, you could argue they actually made a better powerplant.

It was also the first Rover to be available with an automatic gearbox in a diesel. There was a time when the lead time on a new build was 12 months too.

Is it an unrelated coincidence that the 75 looks like an S-Type ? Or is that just my dodgy eyesight ?
