Taking a car to Spain?

Looking into a few ideas and was wondering if I wanted to take a car from the U.K to Spain what kind of costs can be incurred?

Any idea as to cost of shipping? Import duty? Registration of the car?

Any experiences you guys can shed some light on?

Don't know much on the subject, but...

But my mate's dad, has drove his saab 900 turbo cab, down to spain twice! (He brought it back to change the gearbox form a auto, to a manual(!) ), certainly would save on shipping!
As long as it's roadworthy, am sure it would be a whole lot more fun.
I'm sure you could do that and not have to register it or pay any import duty.
(At least for some specified amount of time, anyway)
I'm guessing it's a UK registered car, and you want to keep the car in spain indefinitely?

Honestly, unless it's something you really want to keep, you're best off saving yourself a monumental amount or red tape and hassle and selling it to buy a car locally is the verdict from most folks.

To keep a UK car there for any length of time you really need to get it on Spanish plates - they're red hot on it these days.

As I understand it there's a fair bit of paperwork involved, and with that comes some expense (it varies but budget 1k EUR and you won't be far off). There's a few hoops to jump through in terms of getting it inspected (ITV) and switching to LHD lamps, I'll have a look tomorrow and see exactly what's involved for you.


Shipping isn't bad, I'll have to check prices, but it's usually more cost effective to drive it down though.

Places like France and Portugal (not sure about Spain, but suspect the same) are getting very hot about incorrectly registered/tested 'foreign' cars, ie seizing and auctioning off. Not much of a market for it once registered there, no-one there wants RHD (assuming it is RHD).
