A zetec is an ?

Am i the only one who finds it odd i can buy a Ford Focus Zetec which has a duratech engine

Why did Ford decide to do this.

Was it a move designed to confuse engine geeks?

The question is "A zetec is...", not "a zetec was..."

It is a bit odd, but it definitely referred to the engine before it was used as a trim level.

The engine has been around since the early 90s used in the MK1 Mondeo and some of the "sporty" Escorts and Fiesta (I think, may be wrong).

It was first offered as a trim level on the MK1 Focus I believe.

i know a lad who used to tell everyone his fiesta had 2 zetecs fitted to the engine for extra power.
strangly he wouldn't let me look under the bonnet when i asked to see how it was done.

I'm sure I heard that the 1.25 and 1.4 Zetecs had Yamaha designed heads and were powerful for their size (especially for the mid 90s), being 75 and 90 HP respectively.

That's correct, Yamaha helped out with the Zetec-SE (1.25-1.6 litre) and Zetec-S (1.7) engines, although these were later renamed to Sigma. I had the 1.25 version in my Fiesta and it was a brilliant little engine. Confusingly, it had Zetec-SE written on the engine under the bonnet and a Zetec badge on the back to signify its trim level.
