"When repatriated to the mainland"

Auction house is talking about it like it is some sort of culturally significant, stolen art. Guess that is what you pay them for.

I understand it's being expelled from the Channel Islands for crimes against automotive good taste.

Didn't Chris Evans own this at some point? He certainly spoke about it when he was on R2

It's for the best that that's hidden away in someone's collection rather than being out on the roads.

That's horrendous. He shouldn't have got the Top Gear job based on that alone.

Been done.
Colour aside the bodywork looks far better resolved on that than the C&C one.
Jankel conversion I think, hence it looking better given his form on Rolls/Bentley conversions.
That's built by Jankel for the Sultan - the Bentley Val D'isere. He also commissioned this with the nose of the Conti R amongst the 300 custom built Bentleys he allegedly had built

These are both so much better looking than the shed built tat of sticking a box conversion on a saloon. Saloons have more sloping C pillars so the box on the back looks dreadful. The closer the angle of the C pillar to the angle of the rear tailgate the better it looks which is why the Jankel design works so well. This obviously requires a huge amount of re-engineering which is beyond the shed built fraternity.

It was sold in 1983. it only went to the coachbuilders in circa 1998:

https://www.handh.co.uk/auction/lot/42-1983-bentle...

"The car was supplied new to Jersey via St Helier Garages , Rolls-Royce main dealers and was serviced by them until 1998. Upon leaving Jersey, it showed a milage of 33,000 total today 36,000 which is supported by the service book and MOT certificates

The following information was supplied by the vendor :

"It is very rare to find an early Mulsanne Turbo, it must be unique to find one in shooting break styling. Finished in mustard with claret. Color coded bumpers front and back, radiator shell painted with chrome grille. Fitted with Rolls Royce sports suspension.

When repatriated to the mainland it was sent to renowned coach builders Coway Ltd of West Horton, Lancashire. At which time they embarked on converting the car to a station wagon. At the same time the car was completely re-trimmed in best quality hide along with a new headlining incorporating a DVD player. All woodwork including the picnic trays have also been refurbished."
Its a shooting brake, not break, the paltroons.

Chris Evans bought it for £17k. Lots about it on Google. Known as the "Mentley".

Would look infinitely nicer if it was a nice dark blue or green colour.
Agreed - That 'could' look a lot better in the right colour (possibly the colour of fire!)

rhubarb and custard does it no favors.

Sold for £34,000 in 2018

and £24,000 in 2024.

Not the greatest of investments.

These big modern hand built Bentleys are always a bit stagnant when it comes to appreciation, but most do tend to hold their value or appreciate a little.
Funny that someone paid £34k for it let along £24k. I don't think I'd buy it at £1k.

Looks like Coway were dissolved in October 2013, they had built hearses based on Rolls Royce Silver Spirits so I guess were used to chopping these up.

Is that a Volvo 740 tailgate?

Agree it may not look too bad painted in a dark blue or BRG.

compare it to the price of a low-ish mileage bmw or merc estate from the same era, and its probably priced about the same - by that measure its good value?

I think the featured car has been for sale for years. It’s one of those cars that re-appeared in the same Classic Car dealer magazine advert every month. There are many more like it.
