Porsche 911 Carrera 4S (997) | High Mile Club

What's high mileage for a 911 - 100,000? 200,000? This 997 is nearing 300,000...

It's been said before, and it'll probably be said again: not every single car featured in High Mile Club actually has an enormous distance accrued when age is factored in. 150,000 miles in five years is notable; over 15 or 20 years, however, it speaks more to thorough use and considerate ownership. Looked after properly, cars go on for yonks, especially if no truly terrifying bills emerge. Which alters the stakes a bit.

Porsches are often proof of that, with air-cooled 911s continuing to crop up in more than agreeable condition after many years and many miles of use. Like all manufacturers they've had less brilliant eras of quality control, but they tend to build them tough at Porsche. Furthermore, parts and knowledge are on hand to keep old timers on the road as bits need replacing. If your old Porsche breaks, there's going to be someone not that far away who knows how to fix it. That's not quite the same for every old car.

On the face of it, this 997.2 isn't a 911 that warrants High-Mile Club inclusion. It's not old enough to be appreciated for decades and decades of use, and it's not new enough for a six-figure mileage to be that notable. After all, it's a PDK Carrera 4S, a 911 for all seasons and all driving if ever there was one. Getting beyond 100,000 miles in this would be a very enjoyable, yet fairly simple task.

Only thing being this particular 997 went through 100k in 2012, when it was just three years old - it was showing 96,407 at the first MOT. It then went through 150k by 2014, 200k in 2016, and 250,000 miles in 2019. At its last MOT this C4S had 276,467 miles on the odo, and is now being sold as a 286,625-mile Porsche 911. Incredible.

That's all with one owner, too, with 15 services from Porsche Centre Exeter to support the mileage. What they were doing with it during that time, of course, begs another question. Did they have to visit Europe frequently and hate flying? Was there a regular commute to Inverness? Maybe they just loved their Porsche so much they couldn't stop driving it. Whatever the case, it's looking pretty good for almost 25,000 miles a year, hopefully a testament to the fabled Porsche quality.

Sure, stuff was wearing out a lot according to the MOT history, but that's to be expected with such distances between them. Nothing looks like it's suffered excessively for such mileage, with the wheel, pedals, PDK stick and seats looking well used but far from worn out. Indeed this interior presents better than the Brave Pill 997 - which was offered at the same dealer, actually - with 120k less.

Similarly, the outside seems to scrub up nicely, with unkerbed wheels, no unsightly scratches or scrapes and a front end that - if suffering a tad for almost 300,000 miles - isn't a stone-chip disaster zone. It could pass off as a 911 that's been used much less. You know, like maybe just 180,000 miles...

That the car is priced like a 911 that's been used much less, does lessen the appeal somewhat. Yes, it's a facelifted high-spec 997, but this car's £33k asking price is the same as that for a similarly aged PDK Carrera with, er, 200,000 fewer miles. And that's quite a lot. Still, a sensible offer would probably secure it, as it's hard to imagine buyers queuing around the block for a 911 with a mileage more often seen on an HGV. Or a rocket. And what stories you'll be able to tell then as owner number two, especially once 300k comes and goes. Might be good for half a million...

They take mileage easily , I do 40000 miles a year in ours. Bits do wear out but biggest cost has been front end respray for chipping!

Surely anything major that will go wrong has, potentially more than once? Sure it'll likely throw some bills but what car at this age, never mind the mileage, wouldn't? Not sure it's worth the extra over the other car mind you.

As the owner of a 100k mile 997 C4S, the most terrifying thing about covering 300k would be the fuel bill…..

Anyways amazes me when people have ridiculously high mileages but still try and sell for the same prices as a low-average car. It’s been regularly serviced and is in good condition yeah… but who wants to take this on and try selling it to someone else??

I've always bought on condition over mileage myself. As long as it's properly maintained and wears the mileage well, I'd not be overly concerned. That said, I would expect the price to reflect the mileage to some extent.

A but expensive, as has been pointed out, but let's take a moment to applaud the fact that PH have finally worked out what a "high mileage" car actually is clap

It’s great to read this against all the usual articles about bore score and IMS horror stories. The condition of this looks fantastic. And was the owner lowered into those seats with a crane every morning? The seat bolsters look virtually untouched. I’ve seen 911s on 50k miles with interiors much, much worse than this.

Exactly.

Can you imagine what an average dealer would have offered for this taken in PX for something else.... Probably close to £15k with that mileage. Crazy price being asked for this.

I don't think she's expensive looking at some of the shyte people pay £35k for. I have one with 100,000 miles. Also 1 owner from new. I think I have circa £120k of after care invoices for the car.

I'd want to check what engine and PDK has had attention and if I thought lots of life in them yet would happily make a decent offer.

This had a guide price at the BCA auction it was in for around £8500, however even if it went for double that (very unlikely) it seems like the dealer is trying to make a pretty penny here.

These do respond well to being driven and high mileages but parts do wear and are very expensive to replace. Even if this has been rebuilt already it’s going to need doing again.
I know prices for 911s have gone mental recently but even so, this is silly money.
Fair play to the original owner though!

It does look in great condition for the leg work it’s done but agree the asking price is speculative.

I would think £25k would be the sweet spot for a realistic deal.

If the selling dealer had bought it at BCA for the guide price and sold it for £15k then it might have been palatable, and at a squeeze bought for under £15k and sold for £20k, but this is just extracting the liquid nitrogenous waste....

For the common issues yes, but once you get to this sort of mileage, consumables which people don't usually even consider to be consumables can start to wear out and because they're parts which rarely fail, they can be quite expensive both in terms of cost to buy and in terms of labour to fit. A lot of it will come down to how meticulously it's been maintained, not in terms of servicing but in terms of replacing worn components. For example I'd want to know if it's on its original steering rack and to budget for a replacement if it's not.

It's not so much that I wouldn't buy a car of this mileage, but I'd want to check a number of things which I wouldn't bother to on a low mileage car.

It's also on autotrader, says its priced £18,241 above market average!!

Unless you bought this planning on keeping it till you die then you would be insane!!

I don't think there really IS a "market average" for a near 300k mile 911 but £18k over-priced sounds excessive. If it's as nice as it looks, I don't think the seller would have any difficulty at all getting £25k for it.

More of a concern than the mileage is the fact that this company is on the same site as a gypsy camp...

Really good to see these cars achieving huge mileages but it seems like a lot of Porsche tax on this one that wouldn't be applied other brands.

Looking at their website, most of the 911 ads have a little Autotrader icon saying good/fair deal but this particular advert doesn't. Maybe there isn't one for a deal this one sided.

I was expecting this to be for sale for around £15k to be fair, and who in the right mind is going to pay over £30k for it? Crazy.
