Lego Technic previews 2022 McLaren F1 car

New 1,432-piece kit is also the first time a Formula 1 car has been given the Lego Technic treatment

It would be safe to say there are some Lego fans on PH; the only forum thread longer than the 390-page non-Technic Lego one is the 393-page, er, Technic Lego one. We're also going to assume that F1 is a pretty hot topic, given the Abu Dhabi GP is still being discussed (478 pages later), and there's plenty of chatter around the 2022 cars with only the Haas revealed. By that logic, combining Formula 1 and Lego ought to be popular...

This McLaren Racing kit is the first time that a Formula 1 car has been offered as a Lego Technic build. It's comprised of 1,432 pieces - including moving pistons, steering and suspension - and measures 65cm long, 27mm wide and 13cm high. Though painted in the 2021 shade of Papaya Orange seen on the MCL35M, this car is said to offer "an interpretation of the new-look 2022 F1 race cars as the sport heads into an era of refreshed regulations."

Both Lego and McLaren see some nice synergies between their brands here, too; apparently the build "is designed to reflect the shared McLaren and Lego Group values of pioneering design and cutting-edge technology, while enabling fans to explore their passion for the sport." Just don't let that passion get the better of you if the build is difficult...

McLaren Racing's Technical Director James Key said: "We are excited to unveil the unique Lego Technic model of our McLaren F1 car... This has been made possible by an agile collaboration with the Lego Group team, who have truly embraced the spirit of our brave and bold approach to design. The final product looks fantastic, and we cannot wait to make this available to our fans."

The Lego Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car goes on sale in March, priced from £159.99. With Gran Turismo 7 out just three days later, it's going to be a great month for car-obsessed kids, as they get to watch their parents both build Lego and enjoy the PS5...

There was definitely a Ferrrari F1 car of the same size, many years ago. Maybe it wasn't a "TECHNIC" one though?

Update:
Apparently it was under the "Racers" product line.

I foresee a birthday present from me, to me being on the way, a few months in advance of my birthday.

It's maybe the first "technic" lego F1 car.

Others have either been the current "speed champions" line or the previous "racers" lineup.

I have one of these on the wall right next to me now....

First time for a full Technic F1 car with team tie-in maybe, but not the first Technic F1 car or the first LEGO car with team tie-in, for example...

Controversial opinion, I find technic all a bit samey really, particularly the engines and steering are all the same regardless of whether it's a truck or a bus or an F1 car.
I prefer the normal lego for interesting buildings really.

I can't see a way in which one of these is not going to fill a hole in a shelf next to a couple of porkers and the 488. Especially if it's only 27mm wide....
'cos it's PH and pedantry matters

Looks great and seems very good value compared to some other recent offerings such as the 911's.

I think I had that last one as a kid! Loved it.

This looks great, I just need to finish my Technic Porsche first...

I predict a bank balance £160 lighter and a rainy Sunday sat at the kitchen table for me soon! And likely some industrial strength swearing when I can’t find piece 1268 at a vital point in the build. Happens every time… banghead

What scale is this? It looks like it is roughly the same size as my 2007 Ferrari. I hope so.

As a former LEGO employee and designer, this is not the first LEGO Technic F1 car. Chuckle. But the LEGO model builders have done a great job of this. I’ll be buying one for sure. Nice!

Any Lego "model" comes out looking more like a Lego "something" than the thing it is trying to model. I am surprised how many people love these inauthentics. I guess you can use the blocks for your own creation, too - at a huge premium to regular Legos.

Not Technic I know, but a proper F1 tie in. Won at the Autosport show for being fastest around the Scalextric circuit.

Model set 2556.
