Brabus goes berserk (again) on AMG G63 4X4²

Yes, another 800hp, widebody G-Class - we'll miss this when they're all electric...

It would be fair to say that even the standard Mercedes-AMG G63 is a pretty divisive car, and it’s seldom that Brabus’s work meets with universal approval on PH either. Few sit on the fence when it comes to modifying Mercedes’ 4x4 icon. But you only need peek in the classifieds to see how popular Brabus’s work actually is, with power upgrades, wheels and bodykits featuring on a fair few Gs.

And, well, the customer is always right, especially when their willing to spend a lot of money on an expensive car, so Brabus has a new range of G-Class upgrades focused on the latest 4X4² variant. The attention this time around is on ‘the opportunity to fully express one's own taste in comfort through comprehensive leather/Alcantara trim options and aluminium/carbon elements for the interior’, which is on full display with this demonstrator and its carbon fibre cake of a cabin. But you only need look at the drastic rise in manufacturer sanctioned individualisation programs to know how lucrative this kind of thing is, whether the ideas are good ones or not. Brabus would be daft to miss out on that action.

The rest is more familiar (not that outlandish Brabus interiors are anything too out of the ordinary). For all the G63 variants, portal axled or not, the legendary 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 can be boosted to 700 or 800hp. The latter upgrade takes torque to 738lb ft, too. The forged 22-inch wheels are said to provide ‘maximum strength’, though goodness knows how and where a potential customer would test that, and the Widestar bodykit is back in all its carbon fibre glory. If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it - right? Brabus is also particularly proud of its powerdome, rear spoiler and front grille. For those who find the G-Class lacking in presence, then Brabus - as always - is on hand.

Apparently this new G63 4X4² is ‘ready for adventure’, though it hasn’t yet ventured off the beaten track if the pictures are anything to go by. Would you dare, though? A Brabus overhaul like this will surely be prohibitively expensive. And a regular G-Class is plenty capable enough. But as all the commissions already out there prove, sometimes more than enough is very far from enough - expect to see a few more of these out doing what G-Classes do some point very soon.

For once, I really like that - it's a real life Tonka truck.

Wheel design is great too, nice and simple!

Putting carbon fibre on this tank, to save weight presumably, is like jumping from the 70th floor instead of the 100th, because it'll do you less harm.

It is mad that the front tyres are 325 wide! I'd imagine that is a similar size to the rears on a Lamborghini! A proper beast that is. smokin

Guilty pleasure. Put in all in black & rebadge it and that could be daft fun. As said above, a real life Tonka Toy.

Parent at my daughter's school has an Onyx version. Everything else they do is hideous, but on the G63 is does, kind of work. And sounds like satan getting kicked in the ball-sack.

G63s are obviously a common sight here in Saudi, and I'd be happy enough with a standard G63, but seeing the (also relatively common) Brabus always raises a smile. They're ridiculous, but in a good way.

It's funny how much they trigger PHers too. Some folk need to lighten up.

You won't be lightening up in a G63 at around 2600kg!

Love them. The perfect antidote to the depressingly boring beige turds that so many on here enjoy smile

Just seen one in central London. Illegally parked (with ticket on windscreen) and probably not giving a st. Absolutely horrible thing.

V impressive trick that Mercedes managed to turn these things into an object of desire.

I truly don't get it.

My dad's pal had one in the 80s. It was truly vile to ride in and about as luxurious as a bag of chips.

I think that you're bang on here. I remember when I first looked around the normal G63 and I didn't really like it at all(I thought it was ugly/hideous). However I find myself lusting after them now though, and I think that social media/pop stars/celebrities/footballers etc have really helped to raise their profile in that regard.

Has Brabus finally achieved peak absurdity? They’ve created a car adorned with parts so incredibly over the top that they somehow cancel each other out and look relatively in proportion?!! Would quite like to have a bash in this!
