Behold the Mini Cooper S anniversary special

60 years of the Cooper S and 75 of the Cooper Car Company marked with limited edition Mini

There isn’t a petrolhead on the planet that isn't partial to a Mini; be it as a road car, a race car or even a rally car, it’s impossible not to be captivated. 2023 is a huge year for the most famous small car around, too, as it’s both 60 years since the first Cooper S and 75 years since the Cooper Car Company was created.

To mark the occasion, the Brightwell Company and the Cooper Car Company (now headed up by John Cooper’s son Mike) have collaborated to create the fabulous little Mini you see here. There will be 20 of these anniversary special editions made, all built from original, pre-67 Austin or Morris Mini Coopers or Cooper S models, with the very best in 21st-century bits used to create the Mini restomod that dreams are made of. Every example will mirror the spec seen here: Connaught Cooper Green with an Old English White roof as those were the colours of the Cooper Car Company works Minis that raced in the 60s. Each of the 20 will be rust proofed before painting, to ensure ‘they live on for many years’. Good to hear.

Under the bonnet will be, of course, the little A Series; bored out to 1,380cc from the original 1,275cc, it’s been treated to all the good stuff: a Swiftune cam, new pistons (buyers can choose from Powermax or Omega), twin SU carbs, new valves and an 11.0:1 compression ratio. The gearbox is a close-ratio four-speed, to ensure you’re never out of what promises to be a very exciting powerband. The additional performance will be marshalled by four-piston calipers clamping vented discs and suspension with adjustable caster, camber and Koni adjustable dampers. You just know it’s going to be an absolute hoot to drive.

What marks this Brightwell/Cooper Car Company Cooper S out though, is the look. From the rose petal alloys to the beautiful Moto Lita wheel, it’s a stunning recreation of what were iconic Mini racing cars. Note as well the gold brocade inserts inside with the red carpets (a colour combination unique to this car), ‘C, C, C’ badges for the aluminium pedals, new dials, decals, a Cooper gearknob and the bespoke toolkit to match the interior upholstery. There have, of course, been many lovely Minis over the years, but this is a real treat. There’s a USB port in there somewhere, too.

Mike Cooper said of the new car: “I know Scott [Turner, at Brightwell) and his amazing work and with the Brightwell team and infrastructure we found the perfect fit. These cars will be very special and I’m thrilled about the project. There will be 20 very happy customers when they take delivery of their new Cooper Car Company Minis.” We don’t doubt that for a second. They’re going to be offered in right- and left-hand drive, with customers able to offer up their existing cars for conversion if desired. All UK cars will be sourced with valid V5Cs, and all 20 will get a presentation pack on delivery with photos of the project as well as a Cooper Car Company certificate.

As for a price, there isn’t one publicly available. But we all know classic Minis are not a cheap business anymore; see what David Brown is doing for evidence of that. And this one, with Cooper Car Company involvement, will surely be even more desirable. Best move fast to secure one of the 20 - the classifieds are this way…

... but far more desirable and authentic than that DB restomod.

If this is anywhere near the price of the David Brown model, I think I would go with that as has nicer interior and is probably easier to live with.

This looks more original looking than an out & out restomod so has some appeal but not sure i could live with it day to day.
If your going to spend around £100K on what is in effect a new car then you want to be able to use it with out too many compromise's. The DB Automotive ones are far more desirable in my eyes.

it is a Mini. Why does it need to be "beholden".

Pistonheads wanted us to "Behold" the MG4:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/electric-vehicles...

Pistonheads asked us to "behold" the Radical SR3:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-britishcars/be...

It was necessary, apparently, to behold the Baja 911:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-porsche/behold...

The 911 Dakar needed beholding too:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/beh...

We were invited to behold a Cayenne convertible:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/beh...

We had to behold the copperhead Landrover something or other

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-britishcars/be...

The AMB001 needed beholding:

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-aston/behold-t...

The AMG GT2 has been deleted it seems (the article anyway) but the title still tells you beholding was necessary:

https://prod-front-end.pistonheads.com/news/ph-ger...

BEHOLD the Ram 1500 X too

https://prod-front-end.pistonheads.com/news/ph-ame...

And amongst all this, the manual Supra needed the same treatment.

Can we please, think of a different word..?

I'd like to think I'm a petrolhead but personally I've never liked Minis. They were certainly an innovative car when launched and I respect anyone else who likes them. Each to their own and all that

How absolutely fantastic... the world is a better place when you're behind the wheel of a Mini (even for me at 6ft5 laugh)

The David Brown ones have been modified to the extent that they are required to undergo the IVA test. They aren't IVA'd and wouldn't pass an IVA. Over recent years the DVLA have been increasingly aggressive in identifying these sorts of cars and it may only be a matter of time before their registrations are withdrawn.

For that reason I think the ones that are actually road legal would be the better bet.

Seems a shame to modify 20 original Coopers to make these.

Indeed, given that it's just a restomod they could easily have used a later non-Cooper as the basis and backdated them.

It appears very nicely done, though, and far more appealing than that DB concoction.

It feels heretical to say it but I’m with you on that. I owned one many, many years ago. It was slow, temperamental and it rusted like nothing I’d ever seen or seen since. I love them for what they were and I love this particular car but it wouldn’t be for me.

I got this far along the road of building a very similar in period restomod like this a couple of years ago but reached the realisation that, sadly, Minis are actually very disappointing things to drive, though thye do look lovely and are undoubtedly iconic.

I sold the rolling car and put the funds into another classic Lotus - never regretted it.

Why is this being referred to as a restomod ?, to me a restomod is something using a much newer powertrain / chassis instruments / interior, (thinking 69 Dodge Charger with a chassis under the 'unibody', air con, Hellcat motor, 22 inch wheels with tubs etc), having looked at the car in the metal what's there is all period style modifications, rose petal wheels, optional reclining seats, bigger CC, uprated SU carbs, all things the the Cooper Car Co could offer in the 60's, the only thing that is a bit more modern is the 4 pot calipers and vented discs.

I'd have one over a DB mini, especially with the direct connection back to the Cooper Car Co.

Thing is they may have already been rotting away so in a sense they have restored those cars to a former glory.

Dread to think how much one of these will cost.

Before opening this I thought it was going to be a gross BMW creation with some different stripes and seat covers but gladly proved wrong .
I'm not a Mini fan either but I like that this exists for those with money to splash on it .

Incidentally Cooper's old building in Surbiton is now occupied by a Porsche specialist .

Same here - they're cool little things but I've never wanted to own one.

This is a cool little thing, but not something I would actually want to own.

You got that far along the road, a rolling car with no seats, and you decided that they were disappointing to drive?

????

I like the heresy reference, I was bracing for some incoming responses! There are a few cars like the Mini that one might be expected to like because they are iconic or whatever. I could list a few but I've probably said too much already....getmecoat
