MST reveals prototype 370hp Mk1 Evolution

Restomod specialist is fairly excited about its wider, punchier Mk1 Evo variant. That makes two of us...

MST has provided us with a first sneak peak at its new Mk1 Evolution, the forthcoming high-powered variant it has previously only shown as a rendering. The firm had assured us that the Evolution would be all about ‘taking the classic Mk1 design to a new level’ - and pictures of the rolling prototype suggest it has done exactly that. Clearly, the most notable part of the new build is those larger 17-inch wheels and the dramatically wider arches created to accommodate them under the Mk1’s body.

As you might expect, the Evolution also boasts a reworked chassis, and we can see for the first time several other new carbon fibre features, including a fairly prominent rear diffuser. As well as adding some modern styling heft to what is now a 56-year-old design, the modifications are also about delivering a bigger, grippier footprint - something it will need when MST is done hooking it up to a 2.8-litre Millington Diamond motor. The naturally aspirated four-cylinder unit is the largest, most powerful derivative of its type from the Shropshire-based engine-maker, and ought to be good for 370hp and around 300lb ft of torque.

Which is a fairly senior amount in a Mk1. But then the Evolution is a fairly senior prospect. Alongside the pictures, MST announced that the car will get WRC-grade independent suspension (apparently mimicking the setup Colin McRae is said to have helped develop) backed by either Reiger dampers or a Tractive semi-active alternative. Behind the bigger wheels, there will be six-pot AP Racing brakes and inside its maker will let you choose between a bespoke trim for road use or something much more stripped out for track or rally work.

The latter, one would think, is what the Evolution is really being aimed at - if for no other reason than because its race-prepped engine will be mated to a six-speed Tractive sequential gearbox. Like we said: senior. MST has already confirmed that it intends to build a couple of tarmac rally specials, although we’d be willing to bet that more than one of the 10 other cars being produced initially will arrive in fairly spartan format. That’s the way we already think about the Evo, at any rate. But that’s just us; if you envisage it another way, MST would be delighted to discuss it with you as it opens the order book for 2024. Or you could come to the PH25 event next month and see them in person. Just be prepared to get in line.

In Ireland there are loads of rally specialists who would create a proper Millington rally car for you for €150k+. A 2.8L would not be eligible for rally use, so for "fast road" only.

MST are going from strength to strength, looks great. Though their standard Mk1 would be more than enough for me spin

It will appeal to some, and MST deserve plenty of success; but I have to say that if I had that kind of money to throw at a restomod Escort then I'd be calling Retropower...

It looks like they've done a good job of the wheel arches. They fit in quite well. Personally, the big wheels and diffuser don't really work for me though, and I'm not sure I'd want the independent rear suspension. I understand the whole restomod concept, but I think if you reach a point where you've fundamentally changed the layout/operation of the car, you might as well start with something else. The live axle is part of what makes an Escort an Escort.

Still, I wish MST all the success with it. It's great to see them launching new products.

For me too. I do wonder if the sorts of tyres I'd like to see on so many cars simply aren't available?

I think this sums it up for me. My first car was a Mk1 Escort so I have fond memories. IF I was sufficiently well-heeled to be part of MSTs target audience, I think I'd spend my money on something that didn't look like a heavily-modified version of a fairly average looking 50 year old saloon.

People that have done better in life than me, however, might feel differently.

I think the rear difuser looks at odds with the rest of the design, and being so high off the ground is likely to have zero effect. Looks a bit tacky to my eyes.
The rest of it looks amazing and I'd love to see one taking on a hill-climb or tarmac rally event.

Very nice. In a Bright Red, it would look amazing.

Think if I could afford one I'd go for the standard look MK1 Escort.

However, MST cars are far more desirable than any new Hypercar or 1000bhp+ EV will ever be.

Reminds me, looks wise, of what the "customisers" of the 70s/80s used to do to Mk1 Escorts.

Rover V8 mated to a Jag IRS back end with huge bloated arches, the only thing missing is the bonnet scoop (and garish paint job)

A polite "no thanks" from me.
