Czinger bests Koenigsegg's Laguna Seca record

Doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile - or a tenth of a second...

Such is the glut of exotica in the upper echelons of planet hypercar, it might have been easy to forget about the Czinger 21C. Typically an 11,000rpm, 1,250hp hybrid V8 with the kerbweight of a GR86 would live long in the memory, but such is the silly situation right now - where a week doesn’t pass without another billionaire’s plaything on the scene - that the 21C hasn’t been front page news for a while. It was revealed; it claimed a Laguna Seca record; it faded from feeds. 

But here it is, back in business at its local circuit and with a point to prove: the Czinger has lapped faster than the Koenisegg Jesko, which had only surpassed the 21C a couple of weeks back. Nothing like a bit of friendly competition to get people excited. 1:24.75 is the new best time, just 11 hundredths ahead of the Jesko’s 1:24.86. Just as interestingly, it marks a useful few tenths off the previous 1:25.44 laid down by the Czinger. Clearly, Joel Miller, driver back in 2021 and this time around, has been putting the practise in. No modifications have been declared from that car to this one. We can still quibble about a production car record for a car limited to 80 units, but the speed isn’t in any doubt at all

It’s hard to know which is more startling from the onboard: the cornering speed, or the obscene acceleration - complete with superbike soundtrack - between the bends. The climb to the Corkscrew makes precious little difference to how quickly speed piles on; having apexed the corner before at almost 85mph, the 21C has reached the best part of 140mph before braking. It’s an incredible lap, for sure, though it seems unlikely that Koenigsegg will let it lie given the tiny time difference and its relative lack of laps at Laguna. Czinger will surely relish the challenge.

I always liked the engineering on this car - the 3d printed parts are organic looking, so very beautiful.

What a smart marketing move. If it had beaten the record without the koenigsegg recent time almost no one would have noticed.

Very impressive, and fascinating to see two highly original makers going head to head. But a tenth of a second doesn't prove anything, other than the two are as fast as each other.
If it were same driver, same day, same weather conditions and temp etc. that would possibly make the results more valid, but even then I'm sure there would be more than 1/10 sec between different runs in the same car, same driver.
I'll take the K'egg, please.

Far from being alien, I think they look like organic skeletal forms - that first picture reminds me of a human pelvis!

What will be really interesting is if Czinger decide 'this is our turf', and respond to any challengers each time...

Agreed - I thought that was what it was in the first instance. But this kind of design is logical; nature is perfectly capable of producing straight lines in they are optimal, bones such as the pelvis generally are the shape they are from half a billion years of trial and error and optimisation, making them the most efficient and robust load-bearing shapes for the application. It's surprising that more mechanical parts don't follow similar design approaches to those found in nature, at least until the advent of modern 3D printing.
