For me, the limo should have an additional section inserted. I didn't even know someone could consider large cars as limos.

Limousine cars are simply the functional successor to limousine carriages. Doesn't necessarily need to be slavish to the original features, unless you want it to st every few miles and run on oats.

The VW Phaeton, however... They might as well have called it the VW Sulky given how little it resembles a phaeton in use, size, comfort, presence of roof...

Maybe, except it's an adopted word from French, so perhaps we should look at that definition?

The word limousine is derived from the name of the region - a particular type of carriage hood or roof that physically resembled the raised hood of the cloak worn by the shepherds there.
