In the lingo it is a cracking car. I've put around 105K miles on mine. Feels like it wants to go another million. Great road car yet I use mine around town, chauffeuring my Mom and Dad around town. Comfortable. Good visibility out. I like the auto climate control. Last but not least 420HP. Then engine pulls like a freight train meth.
I've heard they're great for going shopping in, loads of room in the back without that silly scaffolding and leather covered seats for when you want to imprison someone there.
The low down torque means you never have to worry about using the gearbox, just put it into a gear and forget about it. 4WD and T/C means you can drive it in any weather, with a big splitter it'd make a really fast snow plough

I was looking for 18 months for either a GT3 or turbo (search was more turbo based though). I didn't view that many as a lot weren't up to my spec ( was told countless times what I wanted didn't exist), but each time I did, the turbo was a more complete package.
I also found quite a few GT3's had track modifications, but owners stated 'never tracked' which I didn't really understand.
Most of my driving is done for pleasure on A roads around the south west. Early morning or evening runs on flowing roads the turbo is fantastic. So much power, and I don't understand why people say the handling is an issue. I find it really communicative, and cornering speeds and grip still astound me.
I always use the chrono (first thing I press when car is up to temp) without harder suspension setting, and its just about perfect.
I also wanted the option if getting my 2year old in for days out, just like I did with my parents when I was young.
It's the best car I can think of for what I wanted. Gorgeous looks, amazing handling, power and comfort. I get to drive a 472hp rocket when I am by myself, and can then take the family out to feed the ducks and have lunch!

I am in love with mine its a 997gen1, I was also contemplating a GT3 but settled for the turbo as the best option for me. I like the torque and the way the car just pulls and pulls relentless making overtaking multiple cars in one go easy. Its pretty good on fuel for 3.6L getting 22-26mpg. I love the swollen rear arches and the stance of the car. The 4X4 drive gives amazing traction on wet roads even with road tyres making the car a very safe car to travel fast whatever the weather. My only small gripe is the exhaust noise, its a bit too quiet for me. I have just bought Kline innovation sports exhaust to go on next week its a lovely piece of workmanship and a bargain at £1650+vat. I have decided to keep my home-brewed Caterham R500 duratec for any track work don't fancy damaging the PCCB's. Also surprised me how cheap it is to insure the 997TT.

I wanted adaptive sport seats, PCCB, meteor with black and also low miles/owners.I know lots of people say this doesn't matter etc...... But it covers me a bit more on trade-in. That's if I ever sell!! The car also had a few extras that the dealer didn't even mention, like short shift, lady park and extra leather.
I had a gen1 997 turbo for 3 years. Best all rounder period!
Then I took it to the track (SPA). Drove a gen1 997 GT3RS back to back and was shocked how much better/fun the RS was on track.
PCCB - a brand new set of pads lasted 2 days at SPA(down to less than 50%). Unless you only do road never get PCCB.
Put RSS semi solid engine mounts and H&R solid anti roll bars on the turbo which made it a lot stiffer and somewhat ok on the track.
But end of the day it will never be able to touch a GT3.
So recently moved to a gen2 997 GT3 clubsport. Very good road car, shockingly comfy ride! Suspension not harsh at all in normal mode and the buckets are fantastic. And the sound in sport mode is something else!
Anybody looking for RSS engine mounts or/and H&R anti roll bars let me know. Only had them on the car for about 1k miles.

My 3rd Porsche, I've loved them all, but the Turbo is something different. The Turbo to me has always been the Daddy in all it's variants.
With the 996 & 7 variety its very useable if you've got a young family. Can be used everyday for the school run, trip to the shops, weekend blasts and trips away. You can rock up at any hotel and feel good. Similarly you can go to almost any track-day, hoof around all day and then drive home in comfort.
IMO they look amazing, storming performance with or without mods and there now creeping into depreciation proof motoring.
Mines now more of a garage queen as I've got two other daily drivers. Plus, there getting to the age where they need a bit of looking after to keep them in tip top condition. But ploughing £2k / year into refreshing parts still pails into insignificance against newer cars loosing £5k, £10k+ / year.
Just my thoughts as a relatively long term owner

I just love my Turbo. Have owned my 996 since 2004, now running at 673bhp and in perfect condition. Always a thrill to drive and never get tired of the endless power in any gear. Very comfy and handling is fantastic. Have Europipes fitted on mine and they sound lovely especially in second gear, come of the gas a little and she gurgles and pops, then foot to the floor and hear the turbos spool up and then hear the roar of the engine take over. Pulls like a train
