I'm often stopped in the street and asked...

OC - my 993's electric spoiler rubs against the corners of the engine lid when it is in the 'down/closed' position..... is there a way of adjusting this?

Recently I've been experimenting with swopping spoilers over, so I have a few hints to pass-on.

The spoiler is fixed to the spoiler mechanism by four bolts - these do NOT have any adjustment on them. Leave them alone. Unless you want to change your spoiler of course.

The spoiler mechanism is fixed to the engine lid by six bolts - this is where those clever designers included some adjustment.

1) Put your spoiler into the 'up/out' position - look into the aperture from above and you will see three fixed/spot-welded-nuts along each edge - these should be covered by rubber domes. Your domes may well be missing. Order some from your friendly OPC.

Here I've removed one of mine. (Please note anything that looks like rust is copaslip.)



The bolts come into these fixed-nuts from below. On your 993 there will be a number of (complex-shaped) oblong 'spacers' that sit between the underside of your engine lid and the spoiler mechanism. On my 993 there were four spacers on each side. The more spacers there are, the closer the spoiler will be held against the engine lid.

You what? Here are some photos.

2) open the engine lid, and put a blanket over the engine and rear wings.

The photos are all of the RHS.

3) Remove only the innermost bolt.



4) Loosen the other two bolts just a few turns - this allows you to remove the spacers but you don't have to relocate the bolts or support the spoiler/mechanism



5) ...and now you can tease one or more of the spacers out.



Here's one I extracted earlier.



Obviously experiment with the number of spacers on each side, and if the bolts are all slightly loose,you can also move the whole mechanism slightly in the aperture left-right and up-down.

NB You have to remove the third bolt in order to remove/replace a spacer.

Once you have had a first attempt at guessing the adjustment,

6) put the third bolt back into both sides, and get all bolts nearly finger-tight.

7) Leaving the engine lid open, operate the switch in the cabin to put the spoiler into the down/closed position.

8) You can now slide/locate the spoiler exactly in the aperture.

9) Push a scrap piece of paper into each corner to check there is a small gap....





....however, when you tighten the six bolts completely the gap will widen slightly.
Therefore this is an iterative process - experiment with the number of spacers and relocating the spoiler centrally each time by loosening all six bolts.

Perfection is addictive.
