964 C2 vs 997 GTS ?
Discussion
After some views on this...
One of my better motoring acquisitions 7 years ago was a cobalt blue manual C2 964, after plenty of £££
She's is in rude health, so I may get back what I've spent... Just
Later this year I might be in a position to invest a further £30k
I'm sure there a few on here that have owned both
So what's the view ?
My own is that the GTS is quite special but I guess it might be on depreciation curve?
With a sports exhaust it's going to sound great, I love the interior of them.
I guess I'd quite like a 911 I could use all year but with more wow factor than my 996 ?
Btw 996 is very competent but with it being silver it's a bit of a plain Jane

Ah, the sublime GTS again, much discussed on recent threads and admired by many as really the last of the true driver focussed and usable 911s having perfect balance and neutrality to the hydraulic steering especially in 2wd form......
408bhp with a lovely flat torque curve, revised suspension settings, standard sports exhaust and wider C4 body. Personally I prefer PDK with sport Chrono, although 'manuel' is good and widely regarded as far superior to the rather inert 991 box.
Downsides...not many...some consider the black spyder centrelock wheels a pain if you puncture, but I think they look fantastic and are fairly crucial in terms of residuals on the car and have had no problems with mine in over 2 years. More basic spec GTS had the standard placcy dash which to me looks poor in a £80k car.
You mention residuals....again much discussed but these have changed little in the past 18months largely due to a restricted number of proper spec and mileage cars for sale compared to the ubiquitous C2S. Personally, I think residually the GTS will maintain its value very well.......

Yes you need to be spending £60k+ at an OPC to get into decent spec, colour and mileage. PDKs sell better than 'manuels', and attract a £3k premium, although there are fewer manuals about.
I was hoping to keep mine and run alongside my new 991 GT3, but unfortunately it will now have to be sold although there are delays with the GT3 as you have probably hear, so will be keeping the GTS for a few months yet. Its total spec £91k new.

Alcantaras okay....if you like the 70s timewarp hushpuppies and grimey and bobbly steering wheels......

I suppose some people like the 'purists' hideous plastic dash and transmission tunnel too....

A minority may prefer "manuel", and each to their own but without going into a much discussed subject, PDK is 'better' on the GTS and that's why its chosen by the majority of GTS purchasers and why it commands a £3k premium......

2 totally different cars, one is a modern 911 with electronic everything, enormous wheels and tyres, heavy, still depreciating (as is everything post 993 except GT3s) and will drive fundamentally like a 997 drives, and looks like a 997 looks - I probably see 10 or 20 every day in London so they're not a rare sight, which may be a factor for you in buying a 2nd or 3rd car for high days and holidays use.
The 964 is tiny in comparison (good - especially on a B road blast) much lighter, way simpler, feels far more agricultural, demands 5x the effort from the driver, has a terrible turning circle, is not actually that quick so can be wound up on the public road to a far greater extent and looks and sounds better than anything they've made in the last 40 years.
What's good about the 964 becomes clearer with age, it's the other way round with the modern car as it relies on technology, which then gets superseded.
Would be an easy choice for me :-)
