Porsche to Replace 911 GT3 Engine After Car’s Motor Caught Fire
By Christoph Rauwald
March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Porsche AG will replace the engine on the racing version of the 911 sports car after the German automaker took the rare step of telling customers to stop driving the model because the vehicle could catch fire.
“We’re not taking any risks when it comes to the safety of our customers,” Porsche Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller said today on the sidelines of a company event in Stuttgart. “We’re acting fast and decisively to fix this.”
The Volkswagen AG brand sent out details to owners yesterday, and is offering replacement cars such as the 911 Turbo while their vehicles are repaired, Mueller said.
Porsche last month recalled all 785 of the 137,300-euro ($190,930) 911 GT3 from the current model year after two vehicles caught fire following engine failures. No accidents or injuries were tied to the incidents, it said at the time.

but they don't make a " racing version " of the GT3 with that engine

.....

I guess most people have not got a 911 turbo loan car either.

Good a car as the 991 GT3 is I'm sure, you cant get away from the fact that it is not the racing version of the 911 any more, not in the same way previous model GT3's were with the shared Mezger engines.

I suppose this goes back to mollytherockers thread about is the 991 a real GT3?

It's definitely a real good sports car, but I'm not convinced it's a real GT3

I think when a rod lets go the resulting hole punched in the crankcase lets oil out onto red hot exhausts which can catch fire.

Not sure if this is the actual reason but it's plausible
