993: should I switch to Cup 2s from hollow spokes?
Discussion
I bought a set of Cup 2 wheels a few months ago on ebay when a bit of a bargain came up. Intention was to have my PSS10s etc fitted at CG (which I did) then swap the 18" hollow spoke turbos for the 17" Cup 2s, however now I'm not so sure as the car looks pretty good on the turbos:

....but it would also look pretty good on the Cup 2s (found this pic on another PH thread):

Other bonus would be that I'd get a little more ride comfort and a little less grip from the Cup 2s in summer which would be good on both counts, and I could keep the 18" wheels to use as winter tyre rims (which they have on now still) which are bigger have more grip in bad weather, but are a softer compound so maybe not as harsh as 18s with summer rubber on.
What do people think?

....cheeky b'stard that's my photo
Having tried most OE wheels, the so-called Cup2s are sublime for 'driving', but don't look quite as good on the front as the 18s do. The Cup2 7J fronts look slightly too far 'in', though you can use say 5mm spacers.
IMO you should fit some good summers to the Cup2 and enjoy them. If you don't like them, you will always find a buyer.
With this, and the ultra conservative 993er in mind, I would fit N-rated bridgestone S-02 KZ-N3, as everybody loves them even 2nd hand. Great track-tyre too.

It's funny you should say that because that went through my head while writing the original post and putting the 2 pics side by side. The pic of the car with 18s on its own looks fab, but next to a pic with the 17s it all of a sudden seems a little over kill as it were!17 inch Cup 2s all the way. I've heard many a complaint about 18s on a 993, more tendency to tramline, harsher ride etc, never heard of any of that with 17inch wheels.
They might not look so good from the outside, but you can't see em when your driving.
Just be careful of the offset on the rears, Porsche speced two, the one offset looks awful, and doesn't fill out to the arches
Another here for the SO-2, fab tyre, unfortunately I couldn't get them at replacement time and went for the SO-2A, not a bad tyre at all IMO but still does not give the feel of the SO-2.

Mini thread resurrection....
Have had the Cup 2s put on the car now, but as was mentioned earlier, the fronts look like they're a bit to far "in" in a cosmetic way. I'm thinking of ordering some 5mm spacers, but have a few questions:
1) where's the best place to get them? Design911 seem to have them for a not too outrageous amount
2) do I need longer wheel bolts or anything else for that matter for when I put them spacers on?
3) how is this going to affect the handling? Having just had the car set up by Centre Gravity, I don't want to ruin it.

Interesting....how would I tell what offset mine are? And which is the "bad" offset?! I was looking at them earlier and alternated between thinking they looked fine and thinking they were a little "in" like the fronts, so now I've just confused myself!Mario149 said:

Unless I'm going mad, the 993 and earlier have studs and the later cars have bolts. I am led to believe that 5mm spacers (make sure they are hubcentric) can be used on the existing hub and the 'nuts' are still 'on enough' on the existing studs to be OK.Have had the Cup 2s put on the car now, but as was mentioned earlier, the fronts look like they're a bit to far "in" in a cosmetic way. Did that make any sense?
Please all jump in to correct me if I'm wrong.
5mm spacers are now on, car looks fab, and summer road trip starts tomorrow
ETA: also had a play with the PSS10s while it was up and softened them off, much more comfortable around town but dead easy to firm up again when the roads get interesting

Lucky boy. Enjoy the road-trip!
Just to mention it here, yesterday I swopped my wheelset over from 17" with MPS2 N3 version to 17" S-02 KZ-N3 version.
The MPS2 were not worn out, but instead I spotted I had a nail/slow puncture in one of the rears.
So I had a chance to do a direct comparison, re-driving the same section of the A272.
The MPS2 are of course an excellent tyre, but IMO the S-02 beats them in the dry due to the harder sidewall - giving a more instant steering response and a more solid cornering 'feel' and ability.
If you like that sort of thing.

Off on my road trip to Spain in July,
So2 N3 all round fitted ..... Check
5MM spacers at front to push out the Cups a little (it does make a visual difference) ...... Check
New suspension installed ....... Check
Geo done after suspension install ..... Check
Car being detailed before trip (Never had this done before) ..... Check
Ready for six days of some of the most spectacular roads in Europe and with uber tarmac to boot

Watch out Spain, here I come.

Sadly, I did not have the presence of mind to take "before" pics
