Guys,

I need a 2nd car due to expanding family. We already have a RR so I don't need anything absurdly practical (we're only expanding to 3 members!)

Also, I live in Rockies so I need something that can handle the snow 6 months of the year.

Carrera 4 / 997 seems to fit the bill. I have found this one and I have the carfax report which show Porsche main dealer service history and no accidents.

Any thoughts? I know it's got the 2.1 PCM which is naff but otherwise it seems pretty clean to me.

I've had two C4s both gen 1 and gen 2. Dependent on your budget see if you could stretch to a gen 2 car as the engines are much more reliable. Do your research on gen 1 cars and bore scoring/ IMS failure and I would suggest a warranty with the gen 1 car.

Not certain but I think Porsche support US customers better regarding the engine issues in the gen 1 cars. Gen 2 cars do not appear to have any issues.

Having said all this don't be put off a gen 1 car just go in with your eyes open that all.

With winter tyres in the snow you'll be fine as long as it isn't too deep and lifts the car up.

Pic of my Gen 1 Atlas Grey C4s on the day I picked it up....

I used a Turbo last winter and Summer tyres and it was great; i got up slopes normal cars abandoned!

I have C4S and went for the Gen 2 because of the engine worries, despite realising the engine issue fear is a bit OTT. The minor facelift does make a bigger difference in the flesh than on paper, too.

Just to let you know, a late Gen 1 will have the better PCM. So if you can stretch, it is worthwhile finding one. I was lucky enough to get it on my Gen 1 Turbo.

Here's mine in Meteor Grey smile

Thanks for the thoughts. I have researched the IMS issue and it would appear that it affected less than 1% of 2007 cars but perhaps that was misleading info.

Also, this car has only done 26500 miles and also it's got a full dealer history so I believe if IMS issues did come up then Porsche should warranty it.

I would much prefer the PCM 3.0 but it means spending at least another 10k on the car. In any case, I use Google Maps on my phone for all my navigation. Static HDD systems will never be as good. So long as it has Bose and I can plug an iPod in, I'm happy enough.
