Spotted what looked like a 911 Turbo (or GT2) in purple with the side scoops, but had a huge rear wing and "911" on the back rather than Turbo. Easy answer would be these were either added by the owner, but I'm wondering if Porsche did a limited edition turbo variant which had "911" on the back??

Think it must have been added later.. Think the only 996 with the 911 lettering on the deck lid was the 40th anniversary.

Im seeing more and more crap on 996's. I saw this a few months ago, there is also a 996 turbo I see with 3 spoke alloys and a gts badge on the back? Guess it's the price range they are in now.

Indeed it is!

Also worry about people changing badges; does it point to rear crash damage?

Have to say though, prefer the simplicity of the 911 badge.

I believe that starting with the Gen 2 997, there was a factory option to have the normal model name script replaced with '911'. It's certainly an option on the current 991 models.

The 996 Turbo you saw is most likely a case of removing the standard 'turbo' badge and replacing it with the one you saw. You can order pretty much any model badge either from Porsche or from many of the independent parts suppliers.

As has been mentioned, only a few specials have been sold with the '911' badge as standard fitment - generally the anniversary specials (964, 996 IIRC).

My old 996t had 911 on the back but only because a PO had removed the turbo badge and put the 911 on it.
Turbo badge came with the car but I wasn't concerned so left it as it was.

Purely an assumption, but I'd guess that purple was never an OEM colour?
