996 exhaust - hornets nest?
Discussion
The exhaust on my 2001 3.4 996 C2 needs replacing shortly, doesn't have PSE so what are the current ideas on the best system? Don't want anything too loud, definitely don't want boomy. Cost is a factor so nothing eye wateringly expensive please!
Not fussed about performance gains so no race cats or anything, just a good sounding, affordable system required.
Is it worth swapping the air filter for a K&N or similar? I'm sure I've read that the induction sound is much improved, possibly throttle response too?

Well I'm paying Gert Carnewal a visit in Belgium in a couple of weeks, give him a shout to see what options he has (the website isn't completely up to date).
Will post a vid up when I've got them installed, but according to internet sources his Carnewal GT exhausts sound PSE-like.
Not got the time to spare sadly Will post a vid up when I've got them installed, but according to internet sources his Carnewal GT exhausts sound PSE-like.

Bit of a long shot but I managed to pick up a lightly used OE pair off eBay for peanuts - another owner had taken them off his car at 20k miles and stuck them on a shelf as he upgraded to aftermarket. Might be worth a look?
If I'm going to replace them I'd like to upgrade to something better sounding than OE, PSE sounds sooooo much better so want something similar without the £!I understand you can do a mod to stock exhaust similar to PSE (but without the switchable element - it's permanently on), where a small additional pipe allows some of the exhaust gas to bypass the muffler. The larger the pipe, the louder the exhaust.
Believe it costs less than £300, should be much less with the exhaust system off the car already.
Commonly called the Fister / Oettle / Gundo mod.
So iId certainly keep an eye out for a stock exhaust!

Reason I'm going to Belgium is that he fits them for free and I have friends over there to see anyway.
Gert is unlikely to have any exchange boxes for a 996 (from a friends recent experience) although you might find someone with a surplus pair to buy/send off to him (even if the seams are a bit ropey)....I think Gert's witch craft opens the boxes up along the seams so as long as they aren't too snotty he can use them. The noise is more akin to an air cooled 911 & not too intrusive at tick over although sounds great when giving the beans. Alternatively Designtek & others do some good value sports boxes - although your boxes may be too close to the end of their life to do a "gundo hack"/bypass on.

I replaced my knackered original boxes with Dansk Stainless items - v good quality and sound - these do not drone when cruising and are very easy to live with. Under load they are far louder (good thing) before they settle down to a quieter tone under part throttle. Car has a nice burble on tickover. I also fitted a K&N cold air induction kit with cone filter (avoid just adding any sort of replacement panel filter) - all this at full rrp is about a grand. Induction noise brings its own little thing to the party.
Rolling road test after revealed increased power - 28bhp. Happy days!

I had a Dansk on my 996 C4S too and was really happy with the sound.
Glad to hear this as I have a Dansk on order for my C4S as the original silencers look like they are about to split along the bottom seem. The Dansk sports seem a good deal and look factory.

1998 3.4 C2 coupe with genuine PSE (retrofit obviously) and K&N induction, sounds bloody awesome
I've no idea whether it produces more power than standard but I must warm you it's dreadful for economy as the sound at full chat (particularly from 4,000rpm upwards) is so addictive.
Oh, and I only ever switch it to "quiet" to make sure the valve doesn't seize from its lack of use.

Right, been looking on eBay & Dansk seem to be the cheapest, followed by Milltek then interestingly, Powerflow which has a vid from a PH'er on the eBay ad. If that PH'er is reading this perhaps you could update us on it? I see the guys who sell it offer fitting & they're only about 45-60mins from me.
Can't remember what my local indie quoted me but it was over £1k & may even have been £1200, that was for a 'Cargraphic type' whatever that might be. Keen to spend less if possible as she is up for a big service etc this year too

£325.00 for that induction kit - think I can survive without!I replaced my knackered original boxes with Dansk Stainless items - v good quality and sound - these do not drone when cruising and are very easy to live with.
