Hmmmm... different cars really and very dependent on how you will use them.
I've owned a few different 996 & 997 GT3s and currently have a 996 GT2 and a 964 Cabrio WTL both of which i really enjoy but this morning (with the RR Sport in for service), like every morning this week I will walk outside and take the 964 to work, it is a bit softer and more comfortable on the road, has much better ground clearance, but still handles like a go-kart when you throw it into a corner and has more than enough power to enjoy on the road.
If I was heading to a favourite twisty road or a track I would take a GT3/ GT2 for sure as for me that is what they are made for, but as a daily drive I have noticed I always gravitate towards the 964.
So in answer to your question; for the general daily drive/ business usage I would take the 964 over the GT3, if I was taking the car out for the pure pleasure of driving on a good road or a track I would have the GT3.
In my own effort to cut down on the number of toys I have and find the best middle ground from one Porsche I have ordered the GT4 in club sport trim to replace the 964 & the GT2, both of which I will sell in June/ July. I have driven all the modern Porsche fleet as part of my job and I like the way the Cayman GTS drives as a daily driver and a serious track/ drift weapon so I am hoping the GT4 will offer me a similar but even better mix of daily drive & track competence as the GTS

I'd agree with NAS. The GT3 is for when you really want to drive, right to the redline every time. Better experienced on open roads, Euro trips and of course on track. It's OK bumbling about but it can be a frustrating experience. In general the later you go model wise, the more all round usable it is. My stock standard 964 C2 is fun at any speed and has a classic car charm to it with some modernish comforts. They are quite different!

I made the move from 964 to mk1 GT3 last year. I was worried I'd miss the looks, the noise, the view over the bonnet, the instrument cluster, the classic 911 feel through the wheel...
I haven't regretted it for a second. There is a level of excitement and anticipation when driving the Gt3 which just wasn't there with the 964. The GT3 is a step up, not just in terms of power, but in terms of feedback through the steering wheel, it's more direct, more detailed... And there's the engine - it doesnt rev as high as later GT3s buts it's delivery is still much more exciting than the 964. And I think the 996 is starting to have the classic feel to it, which I like.
I still prefer the looks and dimensions of the 964 but as an overall car to own and drive I love the GT3 and I feel lucky to own the original.
I used the 964 as my only car (weekends) and found it easy to live with. The GT3 is now a second car and though I wish I could drive it more, I agree with others that it's not a car to pootle around in.
I also think in relative terms the Gt3 is good value versus the 964 if you were to consider what a sub 50k mile original panel, mint C2 would now cost.
There's a few cars (mk1 and 2) for sale at the moment so try and get a test drive in one of them.

I used to think that I would change my 964 for a 996 GT3 at some point. Two or three years ago the gap between a 964 C2 coupe and the GT3 was about £20K. Even though the price of the 964 has moved upwards (although I think many are optimistically priced)it now looks like that gap has widened to at least £30K. So I'll be sticking with the 964.
