Am I mad? - Thinking of selling my 997.2 GT3...

As per the title really. I've started to race (www.funcup.co.uk - awesome things) which has just accelerated something which I've been feeling for a few years - driving on roads just isn't that much fun (unsurprisingly the more I drive on track, the more I feel this).

So, while I own a Caterham R400, the GT3 just seems a bit pointless. It's still an absolutely wonderful thing and as a one-car-for-everything proposition I'm not sure it can be beaten, but it just seems totally wasted in the way I'm using it at the moment (motorway mileage to and from racetracks).

So, while I could keep it and get myself something more appropriate for the job (M235i maybe?), it just seems ridiculous to have 2 cars which are only for "special occasions", particularly as I only have 1 parking space at my flat in central London, so have to store the others with my Dad around 90 mins away.

No. Caterham is probably more fun on track and certainly cheaper to run.

Good time to cash in on the GT3 if you're up and it'll fund the racing.

I (very reluctantly) put my 997.1 GT3 up for sale last week in order to fund a home extension but now it looks like I may be able to fund the extension by other means!

I'm trying to make the numbers work, so I have withdrawn the advert in the meantime.

In that 5 day period, I had 2 private buyers email me about the car and 2 dealers wanting to buy it.

I guess now is a good time to sell!

Hopefully I won't have to sell mine

I fully understand your point as my GT3 fell into a very similar scenario , my track car was much better on track and my daily runner was better at the role it had to serve..

It's certainly a good time to sell, I only wish I was selling now pocketing an extra £20k or so.. good luck with the racing

I spotted your ad and had assumed it had sold as it had gone. Your 7.1 in GT Silver does look stunning.

There does seem to be an uplift in the number of sellers (some who obviously don't need to sell), maybe it's just the time of the year or maybe people have enjoyed their car but see it as a good time to realize the profit.

Thanks for the opinions, seems at least my thinking is understood and makes sense, totally take the point that it's a good time to sell, though it's not like a regular 997.2 GT3 has gone anything like as silly as a GT3RS or a 991, and considering it's not had the silly price leaps I'm not sure I think it'll ever come down much. Sure, it might go down 20-30k at some point, but I also think it's the kind of car that is likely to be worth 5x as much in 30 years time... Not that that's a reason to keep it, but it just means that I have to accept that if i sell it now, I might never be able to afford another one!

Tha is basically the whole story for your current decision. If you think that you might ever want it in the future then keeping it is the sensible move. However, they have make a chunk of money in the last year and even though it probably isn't the top of the market (UK spec 997.2s are actually pretty rare as they only brought 120 in) there certainly isn't anything bad about cashing out.

saw a white GT3.2 RS at Porsche Hatfield today. Even if you were just using your GT3.2 to go to Tescos I reckon you'd be mad to sell it. Beautiful cars and the nicest 997 IMO. The PCCB on the RS i saw todays looked absolutely massive. Does anyone know if the GT3 .2 RS brakes were much bigger than 997 turbo ceramics? Certainly looked much bigger and they were the newer shinier type.

I like the logic although one did go for a silly(ish) £115k the other week - it's still listed as sold on the PH Classifieds

I know where you're coming from on keeping it - I won't be selling mine as it took too long to get to own one and I enjoy it so much I'd be gutted if it ever went - sure it might go down in value, but it's a car, it's what most cars do!! You cannot rev money to 7,500rpm in a tunnel with a tubi style muffler bypass though and I know what I'd rather do........

Funnily enough, that is how I bought mine, from a guy responding to my thread on here

Not really noticed an increase in 997.1 GT3's for sale but I expect there will be a few more becoming available when summer finally arrives!

I have enjoyed my car for the last couple of years and there has been a healthy (and much welcomed) increase in its value but I didn't buy it to make money, I bought it to drive and at that it is amazing!

The thing is, I am not a rich man and it took many years of saving to actually buy this GT3 but I know if I sell it I will probably never get to buy another again..... and that makes me sad but on the other hand, its a hell of a lot of money to have sat in the garage doing nothing for my wife and daughter!

I sold my 997.2 a few weeks ago ( mid £90s ,relatively high mileage . ) .

I had had it five years and felt I had done everything I wanted to do in it . I have a Caterham 620R which I prefer on the track and whilst the GT3 has a stonking engine there's not many places you can stretch its legs legally in the UK . I also decided 5 years depreciation free motoring was a good deal so the time was right to cash in .

I replaced it with a Boxster GTS !

Totally different car .

only sell if you are done and dusted with GT3, and are no longer interested.
