Im thinking of buying a 996 with a slightly noisy gearbox yikes
Its a C2 convert with 70k on the clock
Im thinking the car clean all sorted would be worth around 12/13k the sellers asking 8k for it.
So is there a potential to get the car back on the road for a couple of grand under the market value?
Of course once the box is off its going to be silly not to change the clutch and ims.

How much of a job is it to get the box off? Could I do it on my drive?
How much is it likely going to cost to have the box rebuilt?
Is it possible to do the ims myself? Or is it a specialist job.

The more im righting the more im thinking im going to be buying an expensive headache.
But then with the box rebuilt ims changed and a new clutch it should be good for a few years.

Engine out to get the box out. DIY possible, but sounds challenging.
I would guess that a box refresh will cost 2500-3000 but that's only a guess.
Then there's all the other stuff you will find.

You might get a known car for market value at the end of it, but you might spend more.

I have seen Turbos (my 996 Turbo, twice) with just the tranny removed. I suspect the 996 tranny could be removed without dropping the engine.

You'll have to call around to 996 tranny rebuilders and get a quote for how much to rebuild/fix the tranny. Get a quote on a new clutch, flywheel, and IMS, too.

My WAG is the only way you'll come out ahead on this car is if you find a stash of large bank notes rolled up in the center console.
