For those of you that use a battery charger, can you use the terminals in the engine compartment ? It's not possible to connect the negative cable to an earth at the battery as there isn't one (is there ?).

I don't understand the question. If the battery didn't have an negative (earth) connection, it wouldn't work.

My trickle charger is connected directly to the battery. Note that if you disconnect the battery to do this, make sure the ignition is on (engine not running) when you disconnect the negative or you'll trigger the alarm.

I should have said "at the battery compartment" not battery. The instructions state to connect the negative cable to an earthing point not the negative battery terminal. This is OK for most cars where the battery is in the engine compartment but not for a 911 where it's not !

The complete shell of the car is earth (-v). As long as you get a location or something that is thick enough to carry the current it will not be any issue. A stud or any metal unpainted surface will be ok. Avoid connecting to metal hoses and lines or any Ecu or electronics. A bolt head on the engine will be acceptable or the chassis of the car if you can find an unpainted surface. Assuming the charger is also low current is less than 6 amps. Any higher I would suggest connection direct to the battery terminals.
